I'm under the impression that these days nobody wants to hire ex-intructors anymore...
same remarks on "turboprops" thread, operators hire ab-initio pilots with 230TT out of known schools.
so, what the hell is wrong with the market ? being a flight instructor doesn't mean anything to anybody anymore ?
got the same impression from CTC who pretty much put it straight to you saying that "too many hours is not good" to fly jets.

In the US without flight instructor you don't even get to fly banner towing ... It is the ONLY way to get your first job...

dorosenco,

I'm with you on that. In the old days, you stood no chance of a job with less than 700 hours, then JAR came along, and brought the number down to 250 or so. Now the latest thing is EASA, and you'll be let loose in a jet with only 30 hours or so actual flying time. I know there will be lots of multicrew simulator work in there too, but I do feel that a grounding in the basics is being missed. Not surprisingly, the airlines are all for it - I can only asume it will mean cheaper cadets. In Europe, the self improver is getting to be something that neither the airlines or regulators want in my opinion.

Well I was a 2000hr instructor when they effectively hired me and I've never heard of any ex-instructor failing conversion. The only people who have not made it through have been sub 500hrs guys to my non-exhaustive-by-any-means knowledge.

You have to understand that with all airlines their requirements and preferences change unpredictably all the time. There are many variables.

Not least are changes in job titles. For instance easyjet has recently shuffled several pilot management roles around to different people. Such change can bring a marked change in philosophy for pilot recruitment. So what a company says one week it might well contradict another seemingly at random.

As long as you realise that in the end its all one big lottery you will stay sane. Buy enough tickets for long enough and you WILL win some kind of job.

The trick is to be able to hang in there long enough.

Cheers

WWW,

That point about management changing is absolutely right. What you also say backs up my belief that both JAR and the EASA proposal are removing the basic grounding in flying, and I suspect that is why the sub 500 hour guys find it more dificult - in my view.

Having said that, I thought EJ would not even entertain anyone with less than 500 TT, but again could be yesterdays thang. Oh, if I remember correctly, you joined GO, I'm sure you'll agree that is entirely different to the EJ of today in terms of recruitement.

Easyjet recruit through the CTC scheme so they do take <500 hour pilots. They are also "sponsoring" cadets through the CTC-McAlpine scheme.

WWW - I thought you joined GO as well. You and I both know that instructing makes you a better pilot :D but my quote from before was from the horses mouth. Given that they factor us down back to Air Cadet experience I gave up deleting roadshow emails and asked to be removed from the mailing list. Whilst easy is one lottery ticket you'd be better off investing in the other ones.

Instructors are getting jobs and getting ones where you don't have to pay for a type rating. Problem is there are more instructors going after fewer jobs at the moment.

Just to add my two pence to the story for what it is worth...
It has nothing to do with JAR that you can now get a job with 200hrs or so, I completed my flight training pre-JAR and got a job with just over 200hrs, yes I was lucky and I was at the right place at the right time.

Just to add a little something from WWW, Ezy to my knowledge have never had flight any instructors failing the conversion course however went thru a phase of having quite a few turbo-prop pilots failing the conversion and rather than looking at their training regime thought it fitter to introduce the TRSS scheme which bears no financial risk to the company, now it does not mean I agree with it but...

Easyjet TRSS

Hi everybody,

I'm looking for some infos about EZY and their TRSS? If someone just went for the selection it would be very kind if he could share some infos?

Here are my questions :

- What's the profile required for the TRSS? Is 1000h TT and 700h Jet enough? Aged 24.

- How long before being called for the interview after applying?

- Is there only 319 type ratings given for the TRSS?

- Which base are offered for the moment?

Thanks to all of you for your answers and happy 2005.

AH64 APACHE 10th Jan 2005 08:55

Talking to friends in the orange land I doubt they will be streaming people through quickly now as since nov last year they slowed their recruitment right down.
This was mostly due to too much expansion happening too fast which they can not manage, some A319's being delivered with faults and deciding to convert STN to 319 from their 737's.

As such , doubt they will be pulling people in from hold pools for six or seven months as training capaciy is full and then will be offered a European base.

I suspect with the orders you will be offered 319.

Hi all,

Any more comments to my previous post?

Cheers

haughtney1 20th Jan 2005 22:56

Apache is right on the money....even cabin crew are being rotated through LGW and LTN from STN.......the recruitment side of things for the flight deck depends apon who you talk to.....however the general consensus is that for EZY they have all they can handle right now.....the CTC abintio people are coming online..hence they raised their TRSS requirements. As always..take this as advice..not hard fact...things can and will change.

Cheers

Easyjet SSTR

Hi there

Regarding the Easyjet SSTR. The Easyjet website states the below hourly requirements for initial appliaction to the course, run by CTC:

"You must hold a JAA or UK frozen/unfrozen ATPL and MCC and have a minimum total experience of 1,500 hours including a minimum of 500 hours multi-crew commercial experience ranging from medium/heavy turboprop to medium/heavy jets or military background (heavy transport, fast jet or multi crew rotary)."

That seems excessive, doesn`t it? Last time I looked, I`m sure it was 500hrs total time for the SSTR? With the requirements listed on the website, many guys would be flying for an airline already. Maybe the website is just out of date or has the requirement been increased?

Any ideas?

5150 23rd Mar 2005 11:07

Heard via a reliable source that this is pretty much true if not even slightly short of the requirement.

Quite a few low-hrs pilots who have got past the interview have subsequently failed the rating hence they've bump up the requirements to minimise this.

Last I heard (about 6 months ago) was minimum 1500 Turbine, otherwise expect your CV to be filed via the shredder.......

Maude Charlee 24th Mar 2005 10:22

I think it has more to do with the numbers of guys they have taken on with nowhere to put them. Your eyes didn't deceive you, it was 500hrs TT late last year and then increased to 1500hrs. As I understand things, company wide they have more new pilots than you can shake a stick at.

Cleared ILS approach 24th Mar 2005 17:15

Hi all,

I was just wondering if EZY is considering the type of experience you have and could give you an interview with less than 1500h TT? Some poeple have less than 1500h TT but with already some jet time.

Regards
