is a caravan rating worth it

im thinking about doing a caravan set class rating in the present climate is it worth it. are operators gonna buy the van and will they want me having paid for the rating myself. im grasping at straws here, seeing as a 737 rating is a bit out of my league

Might be worth waiting to see if SE IFR (public transport) is allowed by the gods first.

Unhappy

Just remember that to upgrade your licence to an unfrozen ATPL you must have a multi pilot type rating on your licence in addition to the 500 hrs multi pilot. Unfortunatley both the caravan 1 & 2 were originaly certified as single pilot, (as is the king air etc), no matter what the curent operating criteria are. Therefore you cannot upgrade your licence with the caravan type rating. You could end up like me with 1000hrs + multi pilot as required by the CAA and aproved by them on an a/c that requires ATPL theory to get the type rating but find that it does not meet the requirment for an upgrade although the 500 hrs count for the multi pilot. Catch 22 springs to mind
From that angle a 737 is better but most operators require line experiance as well as the type rating.

Cortilla,
Someone you and I both know did an SET rating, and appears to have been taken for a ride.

A couple of companies have SET on the basis that it will get approved by the caa for public transport this has been going on for years and last I heard the decision had been posponed. Also have you checked with the company about size of pool and if they are still type rating their own pilots for free. I believe they will only employ pilots over 750hrs as they will need you to fly on other AOC work.
