Preparation for flight school application

Hi everyone! I’m not certain this is the best place to post this thread but I’ll give it a go.

In about 6 months time the applications are opening for a flight school (MPL) that I want to get in to. It’s my first time applying and I know that a lot of people don’t get in there until at least their 2nd attempt. I have no issue applying multiple times, in fact I’m kind of counting on it and viewing this first try as more of a test run to get acquainted with the tests used and to identify my weaker areas in preparation for the 2nd attempt. However, I’d like to at least give myself the best possible chance of getting as far in the application process as possible.

I know that a lot of people say you can’t really prepare for the aptitude tests involved in the selection process and that that’s kind of the point, but nevertheless I just want to do everything in my power to be as well-prepared as one can be.

Here’s what I’m doing so far:
  • I use the app Lumosity for general brain exercise every day.
  • I try to practice mental arithmetic and doing multiplication/division without a calculator at least a couple times a week to keep it fresh and speedy.
  • I’ve recently started using SkyTest preparation software (middle east package, it was recommended by a former student at the school in question) and try to practice at least 15-30 minutes per day.

I’m also just about done with my education at a Part-147 school to become an aircraft maintenance technician (long story, but my plan B essentially) so I have a reasonably extensive knowledge and understanding of aircraft systems etc, albeit not necessarily from an operational POV.

Point is: I’m very passionate about aviation in general and it’s been my life-long goal and ambition to fly for a living. So, now that the time for my first flight school application is nearing, I’m asking anyone and everyone - is there anything apart from what I’m already doing that you would recommend, to increase my chances of performing well in the application aptitude tests and/or interview? I get that it might be tough to say without knowing the specific tests used, but I’m just looking for general advice on things to do/practice on a regular basis to improve the skills and abilities that an aptitude test is made to check and the qualities that an interviewer would be looking for in an applicant.

Any advice is much appreciated!
