Thank you to those who have taken the time to contribute to this thread. I really do appreciate it!
So contacts are obviously a must then. I did put up a thread a few months ago about how to make contacts but didn't get a huge amount of responses. I live in the south-west where there is no major international airport nearby.
How should I go about trying to make these all important contacts exactly?

Finished modular in March 2009, spent 1 year as a flight instructor, then got job on the biz jet, and since the beginning of this year flying as f/o on the A320 for a major airline.
Wouldn't change a single thing, had the best of "both" worlds. Great experience and PIC time as flight instructor, great experience flying the biz jet (raw data flying, manual thrust/AP-FD off/visual approaches/steep approaches/...)and seen a lot of places (sightseeing)...
My thoughts on aviation career development: it's a career that has to be build, step by step, gaining experience and having a lot of fun in the meantime. Unfortunately, there are not many opportunities these days, but for those who keep working/networking there are some jobs around from time to time...
