COPA Airlines Interview
Day 1:
Arrived in MPTO and was met by driver who took a few of us to the Intercontinental Hotel in Downtown Panama City. Checked into hotel and was given breakfast, lunch and dinner meal vouchers for the 4 days.
Day 2:
Driver picked up everyone at 730am. I with 3 others went to the “sim” eval. They use a 737 flight training device which is an accurate mockup of the 737 cockpit. My profile is as follows.
A 737 line captain from COPA briefs you on what you will be doing, what he is looking for and how he will be grading you. He went over the Jepp approach charts and the we moved to a briefing room with a 737 cockpit diagram. He went through all the systems, buttons, knobs, switches and tells you which ones you will be using and which ones you don’t need to worry about. In the sim was the 737 captain, a COPA FO, another instructor who operates the training device. I then got into captain Seat, Copa FO sets up the FMS and anything else you ask for.
Brief the departure, normal T/O with a right turn direct to the Bogota VOR. While flying to the VOR I got a holding clearance from the Copa captain and he then asked which direction would I enter, which was a direct entry, he then gave me another hold and asked how I would enter the hold which was a parallel entry. He laughed saying that was too easy and said there was no reason to enter the hold and then told me to prepare for the ILS 13R Bogota. I had the FO set up the aircraft for the approach and then I briefed the approach. You are then cleared for the ILS approach. The approach was hand flown to a missed approach where the sim is stopped. You are then placed back on rwy 13R and brief the engine out departure. At V1 right engine failed and flew the engine out departure till the aircraft is cleaned up, then sim is stopped. You are then placed on final approach 13R for a single engine visual approach to touchdown then the sim was stopped and you are done.
Waited for the others to do the same, then we were taken back to the hotel. End of day 2.
Day 3:
Picked up at 730am and taken to COPA HQ. You meet with one of the HR reps and they brief you on the day.
-Compass test
-50 question ATP test
-Interview
The compass test was a 225 personality test. No way to study for it. The 50 question ATP test is right from the Gleim book with 1 or to International ICAO questions. The interview lasted about 20-25 mins. Question #1 was why COPA airlines, #2 What if “A” flt. Attendant is on her phone texting and you are trying to give a crew brief, how would you handle the situation, #3 what would you do if a passenger from 1st. class is drunk and harassing the passenger next to him, what would you do, #4 any problem moving to Panama and why do you want to move to Panama. Those were all the questions I received. They do look over you logbook while asking your questions and then tell you the benefits.
After they take you back to the hotel.
Day 4:
745am pick up from the hotel and taken to the medical clinic where you do a urine test for drugs and give a blood sample. The clinic is close to the hotel we decided to walk back to the hotel on our own. Panama is safe to walk around and it’s a 10 min. walk back to the hotel. Later in the day around 4pm a driver picked us all up and took us to the airport for our return flights home.
