throw the dice......
IMHO, save your money, get a college degree and achieve something worthwhile in medicine finance or law. solicitor doctor or accountant come to mind , all achieved in half the time it takes to become a qualified pilot, or at least to landing that first worth while position where you are earning a decent salary.
I know some pilots have to take a second job to supplement their income in order to make ends meet . It takes a huge financial outlay, not to mention the risk ,and you got to be real sure its what you want in life.
If you like to go to the races and have a flutter on a horse or you like to play roulette down at your local casino ,yeah sure have a go.
On the other hand if youve lots of $$$ to spare and you're one of those lucky people who is financially priveleged ,yeah sure what the hell. But be aware of the sharks and be prepared to wait around for years before you get that lucky break.
In this industry its all about networking and in a alot of cases,' whos your daddy....
The choice is yours. If your bittin by the bug and the pure thrill and exitement of flying ,like most of us are, theres no question of anyone influencing you otherwise.

I was terrible in school.
Rubbish at Maths, rubbish in science! Hated school. Hated going to school. I had to work at those later in life before becoming a pilot.
Also, I didn't got on to UNI or college.
Did my ATPL's and passed everything. Its all down to how hard you want something and how hard you'll work!
Best of luck.

Learn to mess around constructively. You can have a laugh and do well at the same time. Not too little, not too much. Both are adverse to you.
It's up to you to find the balance
All the best, put your "pretty clever" mind to work, and see the effects.
Happy landings if you get there
Put.

Hi Cogan,
I also am an air cadet, i have been in for just over 4 years, i have reached flight sergeant, "lucky me" and have done my gliding and fixed wing scholarship, nad lost count the amount of times i have been flying in the A.T.C. I am afraid the hours in A.T.C do not count towards your ppl or raf scholarship. sorry m8, BUT i would definetley look into doing your gliding scholarship and fixed wing scholarship in cadets, it looks amazing on your R.A.F application.
Good luck m8 and just GO FOR IT, and revise like mad for your GCSE'S it pays off

Start by reading the Rotorheads forum. And then becoming rather despondent.

Some things to think about...
Hi. I really want to become a pilot and im determined. Im in year 9 and just chose my GCSE options for next year. I needed some advice .. I wanted to know if any Airlines in the UNITED KINGDOM do sponships to help me get my PPL and also the other licenses because at the moment my family is quite poor. Thanks If you can reply as soon as possible
Start learning to fly right now, to see if you really do like it. It is surprisingly inexpensive for "juniors" - it will probably be cheaper to go solo than it will be to go solo in a car. That will earn you serious kudos at school, but only after you have been able to get people to understand what you are achieving (it isn't as easy as you might expect).
My daughter started when she was 14, was doing formation flying and low-level aerobatic manoevres when she was 15, and went solo when she was 16. And she's nothing special - all that is part of the standard training.
Consider learning to fly as being the "skills" component of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
Don't at this stage in your education assume that you will want to (e.g. your interests change) or be able to (e.g. colour blind) become a commercial pilot. Do make sure that you take early choices that don't preclude becoming a pilot.
Look at <http://www.gliding.co.uk/findaclub/ukmap.htm> to find a club near you.

Start flying now! I spend up for a trial lesson when I was your age and begged my dad to take me to the airfield. I flew a plane before I could drive.
Join your join air cadets because they give you Air Experience Flights and gives you the an advantage for OASC if your going for military.
I'm currently in the University Air Squadron and down at the air field as much as possible.
