Have similar hours myself sling 318, which is nothing! I took on a job just to pay the bank while Im looking... and praying! Have looked everywhere pretty much and nothing happening. Willing do anything, bush flying, towing etc whatever. But the simple matter is there are more qualified pilots out there with more hours. That's how I see it.
Im debating getting a FI rating myself, dont know if I'd make a good FI which is all that is stopping me from doing it now. I think it's a good idea, ok more money...but think of the confidence and experience you will build in yourself from it. Think Ill give it until next march/april save a little if nothing happens between now and then Im heading to the states to get my FI.
BTW ryr are recruiting...two of my friends have interviews coming up this month and next, only reason I havent applied is need to pay off some of my loan before I borrow more!!

You can see that most epople are on your side here. The main thing you need to think about is your financial committments. An FI job will just pay the rent and keep you in the odd bottle of blue nun.

That is of course if you can find an FI position. I recently popped into the school i used to work for and the CFI told me he has no problem finding instructors.

It is however really interresting work and does wonders for your flying ability. On a more romantic note, its a great days work in the summer just hanging around (working your nuts, or tits if female) a flying school.

After a year out of work I did my FI rating and worked for two years until i got a FO job. I am in no doubt it helped me get an interview and had loads to talk about at that interview. I would still now do some instructing if there were any schools near me as its a great skill to have.

I know how you feel and hope you find some aviation work soon.

Slingsby,
keep going and don't get disheartened,,but I would say unless you can get an FI job or a niche gig (like dropping paras) forget it for a couple of years and go back to what you were doing before pending an upturn.
I was made redundant after 9/11, but things then were not half as bad as they are now,

Everybody in the airlines is about as comfortable as a man with 20 angry wasps up their arse at the minute.....

However the FTO's are a good place to get a few hours flying over the weekends and time to job hunt in the week.
