At my airline around 6% of the pilots are women. Listening to voices on the RT, I suspect this figure is fairly typical for the UK.

I did my PPL with a female instructor, and she was (and still is) one of the most capable and professional pilots I've ever flown with.

No difference in selection between men and women, and I don't see why there would be any difference in performance - if you're capable of getting the licences and passing the type rating, you can do the job.

BBE777,

Do you want to get a job in Colombia? Find out if there's any women in the airlines you're targetting. If so, then that's a useful thing for you.

Are there equal opportunity legislation in Colombia? This should ensure a fair go. That's all you want.

Other than that, just do the usual. Research, interview practise and keep your instrument scan up to speed.

women vs. men

Female 767 Captain, LCA, TRE for major. There are commuter jobs, corporate and jobs overseas. Very competitive now. No preference offered, as in my opinion should be the case. It should be based on experience. Flying partners will be fine as long as you are compatent and capable. In anything anyone does you have to earn respect and trust and I am sure you will do so. I have flown with both male and female the vast majority are great and some stand out and not in a good way.

Hope this helps and good luck.

I'm from colombia but living in spain where I'll get my license. I hope to get a job somewhere else in europe.

I know there shouldnt be any "discrimination" towards women but realistically things happen that donīt seem to be right, specially because lots of pilots (captains mostly) are from the old school, come from the military world... and I just wanted to hear experiences.
I think that we need to work harder to get an equal respect, we need to be competent enough, it shouldnt have to be like that, but I've seen that just in the school.
I was wondering if in an actual job it would be worse, better or just the same...

Nice job and thanks to all

Wow..

Well lot's of pressure to hire women in domestic US airliner..

If you have a thousand hours, your a lock at most airlines here...affirmitive action really works in this male dominated industry...

Dont worry about it, employers love women pilots, for that matter they love all minoritys. Its the straight anglo saxon blonde haired blue eyed male that has got to watch their backs.

VIRGA, women are not a minority. In fact unless my stats are wrong they're slight majority!

BBE777
There are sometimes opposing viewpoints, women are given preference or women have to fight harder than men to achieve the goal.

I would suggest you concentrate on becoming the best pilot you can be rather than worrying about your sex being a help or a hindrance. A good pilot will always get a job, male or female.

I won't speak for women's experiences but of the several female pilots I know quite well. Some have had attitude problems from male pilots and some hardly any problems at all.

In my experience, poor pilots and pilots with 'issues', male or female are easy enough to spot.

Dont be rediculous...Your the one who posted the thread. I fly with excellent female pilots every day. No need to go on the defence straight away.

I have worked on many a recruitment panel and stand by the fact that companies love female pilots.. Fact if two get through these days to final stage and they are both exactly the same. These days the female will get it. Im not bitter about it.

Get off you high horse.

I think we will always try our best to get the best, at least try hard to get enough...
sadly in this century some still think that being a pilot is hard-work and shouldnt be done by fems...

Two arms, two legs and two eyes. We all get there but it interests me īHowī......this was just to hear experiences.

Anyway, i think we all know that, Happy flying folks

enjoy being among clouds

Some companies prefer female Flight Attendants versus male FAs.

The vast majority hire both genders. Same deal for flight crew.

Move on.

So what? That's not a problem unless the person who thinks that is sitting opposite to you in an airline interview.

Stop inventing issues to worry about. You sound like you have your excuses ready before you even fail. If you want to be a pilot get on with it. You will get a job if you're good enough, male or female. Like Redsnail says, 'Move on'.

discrimination

Just going off point a bit because someone talked about minorities.

The BA application system now asked a about your religion and sexual orientation.

What is the reasoning behind that, especiallly the latter.

If I said I was a gay buddhist, would that help my application.

And before anyone jumps down my throat. I have no problems with gays or buddhists.

BBE777,

When it comes to an interview, just be yourself. Make sure every thing is order, such as your log book, licenses and referees. Do some research on the company to see if they do hire females, if they don't, don't waste your time. Same goes for hiring low houred pilots.

Dress conservatively. Some suggest a skirt & jacket, others a trouser suit. (I wear a trouser suit). Every thing understated. ie no flashy jewellery or jingly bracelets.

Practice answering the potential questions and have prepared answers for the questions about marriage and children. They aren't supposed to ask those questions but they will...

You can't help your gender but you can help how you come across at an interview.

very nice from you redsnail, thanks
I heard from some guys after an interview taking the sellotape of their arms where they had bracelets, hehehe

and to jamestkirk, is true, that's what I wanted to know, all those kind of things that you find odd in an interview...
I heard that married and/or with children would have a bit of a hard time going in...
I understand it means money.. but why?! It shouldnt!

BBE777,

Airlines just see it as an inconvenience because if you were to have children you would need to take leave and then on return you would likely want to work part time. I recall a female BA pilot won a court case regarding working part time(?) when she hadn't been at the company for the length of time suually needed to work part time.
