PPL Flying Scholarship for 2008 Available

HI All
This year’s sponsorship for a PPL has not yet been given. Why not try applying. You have to be between 15 and 21 before the 30th June 2008. Part and full sponsorships are given and are not restricted to just one a year. Go to www.flyingscholarship.co.uk for more info. The site is not up to date but will be within a day or so.
Good Luck

If writing to apply, what would one say? Simply stating that you would like to be in contention, or are there any details that need to be stated?

Edit: Disregard, they have put the app form on the website so people won't need to know.

Cheque?

Couple of questions:
1-The application form requires a cheque to be enclosed but unless I'm blind I can't see for how much?
2-Again, unless I'm being blind, it doesn't state explicitly what the cheque is for, a few other pages mention about a fund raising target of £130,000 but I find it slightly odd that applicants are having to pay to apply for the scholarship?

No harm to them, great opportunity for young folk to get off the ground as long as the scheme is kosher! Actually, should correct the 'young' remark, I still consider myself to be a young 32.

It's not a test be we are looking for people who can read all the material and apply themselves to respond appropriately.

Sorry it's only open to British nationals

As for suspect!!!!! I find that comment very insulting if you bother to read through the website you will also find a charity number you can look that up on the government web site.

We gave one full and one part scholarship last year, two the year before and one the year before that and we have funds for a fare few more. Just thought I’d tell people about it. Apply if you want….... or not. I don’t care. But don’t insult........... it’s rude.

It's a shame some people can’t see a good thing without wanting to put it down just because they can't be part of it.

George T, hopefully you're not responding to me as I said 'odd', not 'suspect'.

Don't see why you're surprised at people questioning the 'administration fee' in this day and age though. Just because people are signing up to £60-70k debt for their fATPLs doesn't mean that £30 here and there isn't still expensive and this is just to apply!

Like if I said to you, "Your website needs tidying up to make it more intuitive and some discreet google ads could bring you in some money for nothing but by the way, you need to pay me £30 just to analyse it and I might not be able to do anything but I'll be keeping your money" you'd probably tell me where to go and you'd be right.

And I'm afraid that having a registered charity number is no moral guarantee. People are far too suspicious these days which is exactly the right attitude to have when there are so many out there who would happily take your money and give nothing in return - of course, I'm not saying that this applies to this scholarship, just that you shouldn't be surprised that people question it.

Some constructive criticism of the application form though - the paragraph requesting the applicant to enclose the cheque (without reference to an amount) is nowhere near the reference to the £30 non refundable administration charge which to me looks like its payable when the training begins - just my humble opinion.

I'll repeat my initial comments though - this is a great opportunity for the young folk.

Hi George,

I think this is a wonderful idea and am glad to see such a program still exists.

I'm browsing through your website but can't seem to find out where the training would take place. Would it be done at a local airport to yourselves or is it an airfield of the candidate's choice? (Verified airfield obviously).

Look forward to hearing from you!

preduk,

From what I've gathered it's from a verified airfield of your choice.

I guess the cost of the stamp is just about covered by the £30 you charged the youngsters to apply.

Why do applicants have to pay £30?
Why is it non refundable?
What do they get for their £30?
I can't see where it says what the £30 is for. Sorry if it does and I missed it.

I hope you'll treat these as reasonable questions not rude or insulting.

£30 is quite a lot for youngsters. Not many adults would buy a £30 Lotto ticket for the chance of winning say £7000 or whatever a PPL costs in England.

Why not e-mail George? More efficient perhaps.
If I did that and he replied, I'd know what he said but nobody else would.

Agree it sounds steep. IMHO it's not fair even for a charity to raise money out of youngsters just for applying. I don't think any of the other aviation charities who offer scholarships do that but I'm open to correction if I got that wrong.

Probably too busy banking the cheques - couldn't resist that one!

Think he might have started something though, can anyone organise a poll on the main board regarding a PPL lotto, I don't seem to have the access?

Think about it - £5 a ticket x 1000 people = prize of 1 PPL payable directly to a FTO - I know I would play every now and then for 1000-1 chance of winning a paid for PPL!

The reason I’ve not responded is because I do not answer to you! Make what you will of it apply or not it up to you. If you’re too small minded to look at this as an opportunity then it’s your loss. Thought I was offering people an opportunity. Funny how negative people can make a good thing into a bad one! Yes be careful there are lots of people who are trying to rip you off but you got it wrong this time. As I say do what you like.
