aircraft enthusiasts day

i have just found an advert in my local paper for an aircraft enthusiasts day. Its a tour giving a behind the scenes look at flight planning , airline operations and engineering with talks and presentations by pilots, flight planning and operations.
there is then a 55 minute flight with inflight commentary regarding thrust ad flap settings, V1, V2 rotate speeds, fuel burn and climb rate along with a simulated missed appproach with flaps and undeercarriage down

has anyone been on one of these days or had anything to do with them before? im looking at it as an insight into a carreer as a pilot .....am i barking up the wrong tree?

any info would be great, thanks in advance richard.

My advice to you is to write to a large airline and they will be all to happy to let you come down for a day or two and look at various departments or spend the day in Flight Ops. It will cost you nothing (you might even get a trip to the sims if your timing is right) and the money you save could go towards a lesson in a light aircraft.

The day provided a good insight into the workings of my travel and how it operated on a day to day basis.
there were short seminars regarding cabin crew, fire safety, flight ops, crewing and engineering and also talks from pilots about pre flight checks and their working routines.

i got chosen to extinguish a simulated oven fire at the my travel hangar and i had a go on the evac slide on an airbus a330.

the flight from manchester was really good with the on board commentary from one of the pilots. we flew in an airbus a321 which got blown about a fair bit but that made things more interesting.
we flew round to liverpool near a beacon called wallasey 1 or something then descended into liverpool airport for a class 1 aborted landing (?) which had everyone grinning. we descended to 277 feet or there abouts then took off again and flew back into manchester.

the day was really long, from 9am - 7.30pm ish at night and the later seminars regarding jet turbines and the running costs of light and heavy repairs began to leave me feeling slightly bemused.

all in all the day was really well put together and well executed. i would recommend it to anyone with even the slightest interest in aviation just for the flight alone.
it was only the second one that had been put on and there are more planned for the future.

if anyone from my travel reads this i would just like to say thanks for putting on such a good day.

all the best Peelay.

There are rumours that Thomas Cook will run these days again during this winter. Nothing confirmed yet though.

I wouldn't be surprised if TC did run these days again, a good little money earner for them.
