Exclamation The selection process your thoughts please!

This summer I have had the privilege to apply to four sponsorship schemes and attend three out of four assessment days. They have all taught me a great deal about myself and have shown up weakness to act upon, however they have also brought up thing that have confused me about the selection process on a whole.

The first one is the CTC scheme, if you fail any of the stages and they don’t state you can re-apply then that door is shut to you forever? I am not the man I was 5 years ago, and Im sure I won’t be the man I am now in 5 years time, people change, they improve themselves life is all about change, life experiences!

My second point is the computer based aptitude tests, I sat two different tests within three months of each other and the results completely contradicted themselves; one said I worked well under high work load and the other said I didn’t; one said I had below average hand eye co-ordination while the other said above average? Which one is right?

Thirdly can you really base a person on one test at a time? I would like to think we are all different in the way we act, learn and experience things. Why not put more faith in the application forms and then invited candidates to sit the computer based aptitude tests, group exercises, simulator assessments and interview over two days build up the whole picture then decide?

These are just my thoughts and opinions on this matter and I would love to hear other people’s points of view, whether success or unsuccessful on obtaining a sponsorship place or people in the industry! Don’t get me wrong I not spitting my dummy out because I didn’t get through each stage, this process have been a great experience for me and I feel better equip to face more selection processes because of it and I will one day take to the skies as a pilot even if I have to sell my sole for the self-sponsored tuition fees!

selection process are BS!

in 3 hours they think they know you, as you say, people change, but it is a way to select.
Some airlines select you on your age, hair color, arian race,...or even handshake.
Some on available date, money account, what your daddy does, or what do you drive...
They all think they have the best tests, yeahh, my butt!!!old software computer with virus, stupid tests running on window 95, test for military pilots,...and we still have pilots crashing planes.
This year, JAA airlines have the record of crashes!
they say you can not reapply, good for you, go check with BA, maybe they will accept you and you will have a good laugh in 5 years on your airbus.

Keep in mind, this market is a farce, a joke, at the end, we are all paying...

good luck to you.

(if you want a 1 week selection, will you pay?)

Please excuse the ramblings of an idiot above.

KTDA

Very interesting post, of which you make some valid points. However it is worth noting that above all else the profession you seek to join is a business and therefore its primary aim is to make money. That is why they can't invite all candidates to a two day + assessment. It would cost too much money!

To say that the door is automatically shut is not necessarily true either. Check out some of the CTC threads for proof that some people get invited back. A personality is defined by the age of 6 and character fairly set by the age of 25 years. The selection process is a snapshot, as indeed all aviation tests and check rides. They are judged largely by humans who make mistakes and therefore have an element of doubt. That’s simply aviation!

Computer testing is a very well defined art. If hypothetically one took the same test twice and got different results, I would guess the candidate had an off day. If one took two different tests, then expect two different results as they were most likely tailored to that company's needs and testing slightly different aspects of the candidates ability. Aptitude by definition can not be trained as such and no amount of private tuition will help.

If I were you, I would gather the experiences in and store them away for the next time. Secondly, don't give up. Get back in touch with these people and ask fro a second go. They may say no, but you lose nothing by asking. Lastly, as you are doing. Stay positive!

I have the solution

This is all you need for a selection process

Name:

Do you know A320rider personally? Yes / No

If you did, would you want to go flying with him? Yes / No

Do you listen to a word he says? Yes / No

If you were an airline, would you employ him? Yes / No

Better than any Pyschometric test I have ever done.

M-P

Mmmmm the board of selectors will only now consider you for a position on the strength of your other answers.

They do acknowledge your honesty but doubt your sanity as they feel you should NEVER admit to that!

Interesting Point to start off with, as far as I know, there are some companies that do assess their potential cadets not stage by stage but over a period of, let's say, 2-3 days. Austrian Airlines would be one, Lufthansa another. Thus the approach is more comprehensive than for example with the CTC scheme, but I guess you could find pros and cons for either method...

greez...

please use your brain, a company who really need pilot do not ask money for selection process.

all airlines asking to pay $ for an interview are running scam , and are more interested by money than YOU.

It sounds that some of you have to much cash to spend, so go for it. Pay to play videogames and see your results, then pay again and come back on their videogame to see if you have a better score.

some guys in their office must laugh, to see all these pilots paying them.

Sadly it is a way to make money.do they give you a T-shirt ?

dude youve lost the plot big time on this one. Still tho, your always good for a laugh. You actually remind me of "spaceman1000" who used to post alot of rubbish.

I think he went to play with trains or something. Anyone remember him?

No one has mentioned paying for a selection process.

No one mentioned that either.

You are a very bitter little man that infects the lives of wannabes with your drivel.

Why don't you go away and do your Dr Who regeneration stuff that you have done in the past (spaceman etc etc) but this time come back as a helpful individual who isn't totally pi$$ed off with the world simply because airline see you for the baffoon you are.

Dear All

First of all thanks for posting your thoughts and opinions, it’s been very interesting reading what you have had to say on the matter!

Secondly A320rider

Thank you for your contributions but I think you have some serious issues with the whole pilot sponsorship thing! You need to take a step back and look at it from a distance, if it was easy everyone would have a place with an airline. Fair enough it costs money and it does get you down from time to time, but if you want it as badly as I do, as we all do, then that’s what it takes!

The point is to be positive, failing that, find a mirror and have a word with yourself!

Keep it real guys!
