Pilot Shortage Looming
I have been told today AGAIN! the above statement and have done some research on the subject.
It seems the above statement was created by the famous wright brothers about 100 years ago who expressed thier concern that they were about to build aircraft and had no-one to fly them.
Un-canny that the situation still exists today.
I hope this rumour has been put to rest and i can now enjoy my babycham with an extra point on my historical IQ.

A lot of airlines are lean on crews at the moment. Never seen Flight so full with jobs for quite a while. Think some turboprop operators may be very short of Captains. Know one person who was offered an airline job before she had done her IR test - on the proviso that she passed! Certainly a sign of times being healthier but I would not say it is a shortage.... yet!

Perhaps about time to make some investment if times are that lean - along the lines of SPONSORSHIP and FUNDED TRs, instead of expecting us chumps to pay for it despite pay remaining static in spite of supposed better times...

The only benifit of Sponsorship in my view is that the company will bond you for longer so in their eyes you are more of a long term asset to them. The penny has dropped with BA that why spend thousands of pounds on Sponsorship schemes when people with CPLs are probably flooding their online application system. Bonding is not much of an issue since if you choose to fly for BA then it is more of a long term career move. Compare easyJet which is more likely to have a higher pilot turnover and there you see the TRSS with 5 year bonds etc etc.
Self funded TRs will still exist but the solution is simple - only apply to airlines that do things the old fashioned way!

We are certainly seeing a shortage of GOOD crews with the right hours, loads of 250 hr guys with not much twin time, currently looking for 2 crew members 400hrs tt minimum, 40 multi FR, and are struggling a bit. Trouble is a lot of guys with only 400hrs do not have the skills or preparation to get through a base check.
