How much to pilots get paid (honestly!)?

Hi

I was wondering what newly qualified pilots with just the 200 hours and a frozen atpl are realistically going to get paid if they get a job fresh out of integrated flight school?

From what I understand, unless you are lucky enough to get a job with an airline straight away, many people start life as a flight instructor, then move up to working for air taxi firms. Could anyone tell me what each of these jobs realistically pay? Also, are jobs after the first one relatively easy to get? And do most people have no choice over where they work in the UK (geographically speaking) because it is so hard to get the first job?

Any help and advise would be greatly appreciated

The first place to look at to get a general idea is www.ppjn.com

I know people who have secured jobs with BMed and Excel on around £38k per annum after coming out of an integrated school. I think thats about the best you'll get after being a newbie!

However i have heard you can get as low as around £18k with a turboprop position. Even Ryanair (see the many enjoyable threads on the wannabee forums) pay as low as around £9k per year and only half a year's flight pay ( about £12k ish) - thats pretty bad considering you'll be working your ass off and its a jet job.

I think the salary greatly varies according to whether you pay for your type rating and how stingy your prospective company is!

Being an instructor i think you can earn anywhere between £10k and £25k depending on who you work for.

Air Taxi will probably be quite a bit less than normal commercial jobs but i suppose there is less pressure and less work to do!

Are jobs easy to get? Some integrated schemes claim that none of their graduates have had to wait for more than 6 months to secure a job. Who knows? It all depends on who you know, the current requirements for newbies etc. At the moment things are looking good with signs of great expansion, so i can imagine there are quite a good number of jobs around.

In regards to where you are based i think you can choose some of your top choices but i dont think you necessarily get any. I.e there may be a requirement for pilots only based at a certain base eg Glasgow so you have to be able to work there. I believe after a few years you have been with a company you then ask to relocate to a preferred base.

Hope this answers some if not all of your questions

All the best.
