PPrune Cadet Type Rating Update?

I was wondering how those on the course are now doing - could we get an idea of what the course was like, did everyone pass and if they are now line flying? (I've done a search for this but nothing turns up)

Also Danny and Hamrah mentioned they would put something together outlining the things they looked at when sorting through the CVs?

Hi there Jet Mouse, its funny..I was flying with Hamrah on Monday night and he mentioned that one of us should do a quick update as to how things are going etc...so here goes.

All 4 of us have got through the type rating and base training. As far as Im aware 2 of us have now started line training, with the other two guys starting very shortly.

As for me personally, the whole thing still seems very unreal, right from day one when we all met up for the first time and started to get to know everyone a couple of things stood out. We are a diverse bunch, both in terms of experience and background, and secondly, everyone was determined to make the most of what is a fantastic opportunity.

The groundschool itself was conducted at Alteon near Gatwick, and consisted of approximately 3 1/2 weeks of CBT's....cups of coffee...trips to the snack machine...and bad jokes. In the process we sat 2 progress tests and passed the final exam with an average mark of 98%...(it would have been higher but I got a couple of questions wrong!)

From there we moved to Cranebank (British Airways training centre) to begin our simulator training. Initially we completed 4 sessions in a fixed base trainer, this was to familairise ourselves with the 757 cockpit, and to get a basic understanding of applying what we had learnt to the actual aircraft operation.

The full motion came next...this was made up of 8 4 hour sessions to bring us up to LST standard. It covered what I imagine is a fairly set course of instruction with plenty scope for feedback, it was however very intensive and I certainly found I slept rather soundly at the end of each day! We were fortunate to get a very very experienced bunch of sim instructors who have given us the tools to progress onwards and upwards. In my opinion the standard of instruction was very high, and I was impressed that the training programme was flexible enought to cope with all our varying experience levels. At the end of the 8 sessions we sat the LST...for me a very intimidating experience...but a pass was obtained!

After a break of a couple of weeks...we went base training...for me this was the most daunting, up close the 757 is a rather large and imposing chunk of aluminium.

The base training consisted of 6 take offs and landings for which we positioned to Saint Brieuc on the Brest Peninsula. Flying a big jet for the first time was certainly a bit nerve racking and I can honestly say Ive not had sweatier palms and a dryer mouth for a long time! The final thrill of the day for me was that I was given the positioning sector back to Gatwick..what an end to the day!

Right up to date I have completed 10 sectors (about 39 hours) of line training, which has included flights to Kalamata(Greece), Taba and Al Alamein (Egypt), Bergen (Norway), and Olbia in Sardinia.

So far so good......Hamrah, Danny, Don, Alan D, Alan W, Des K, and all the rest of the fantastic people at Astraeus (including Ops!) thank you all for this fantastic opportunity.

Jetmouse I hope this gives you a good idea of what weve been up to, and of how fortunate we all realise we are.

Cheers

H
