Any Aussie pilots flying in the UK, request advice?
Hi
Just after some advice, have CPL, M/E CIR, 750 hours, over 500 hours command in charter. Have right to live and work in UK, looking at transferring my Lic, to the UK. Looking for advice on what are my chances work wise with these sort of hours, expect to be over 1000 total before getting there and transferring. What is your advice. Is it worth it, does the market look better over the next 12 to 24 months. Is it manageble doing the JAR ATPL by distant education.
cheers in advance for your feedback.

Try a search in these and the D&G forums.
It's pretty costly for you as you don't have any multi crew time.
You'll be looking at least $A30,000 or so.
Check out the CAA's website for the official gen.
Work wise, hmmm not brilliant at the moment. The low houred guys here and those with no turbine time are still finding it hard going to get a start although it's slowly improving.
You can do the ATPL via distance learning however, at the moment you'll have to still travel to the UK to do the exams.
If I were you, if you haven't got the Oz ATPL subjects done, get them done.

Doing the ATPL's long distance was difficult for me, I decided to sit the full groundschool and was much easier.
I came over here with 370 hours or so and started off doing meat bombing and then got offered a job on the F27 at about 410 hours. You can get into a better job in the UK faster than you could in Oz but there are alot of other low houred guys out there looking for work. It's expensive to convert but was worth it for me.
Seeing as you will have 1000 hours when you decide to come would be a great advantage I would say. Probably stand a better chance than most of the guys over here.
I've seen a few jobs here looking for people with 1000 hours etc
Good Luck

Yeah, I've got some advice for any aussie pilots that take uk jobs - try not to bang on about how good it is back "home" and how you can't wait to get back "home" etc etc.
Just a small point, we love you all really.

Please sign up to the Euro and the new proposed European constitution, then Aussies taking????? UK JOBS will be the least of your worries.
On the subject on TAKING, STEALING BLA,BLA,BLA, a successful candidate is chosen on merit rather than nationality/origin/colour etc.
Get that one straight pal.
G’day.

Turbine Dreamer,
I have just come back from the uk, backpacking and looking at the pros and cons of the oz to uk conversion. I have the same tickets as you but more total time (around 1400) I can definately reccomend ATPL's be done in house, this will take 6 months full time (you will not have time to work a part time job if you want to sleep) and cost at least 1500 pounds maybe even 2000.
Second of all you are up for a ME IFR flying course of at least 15 hours at about 250 pounds and hour. plus radio licence's and other small costs and fees totaling about 1000 pounds...
this all comes to around 7000 or so whis about $17000 plus the cost of living in london for 6 months which also quite expensive around another $8000
for food and accom.
I have this information from one of the smaller and cheaper flying schools just north of london where a mate works.
In summing up, there is not much in the way of GA in the UK so if you gonna make the move make it worth your while do it for the atpl and for quite a few years... even when your on the smaller jets eg ezyjet, the money is not great (starting around 28000 pounds) i believe, but you are flying a jet!!!!
hope this helps, cheers da end

It depends on what you want to fly. Although the high capacity airline CAO doesn't require 500 hours in command of multi engine aircraft some companies do have that requirement in their ops manual.
So, that's one question you'll need to answer. Nope, you can't log command from the RHS as you can in the UK/EU so that won't work either. P1 U/S isn't acknowlegded as command time either.
If that's fine, then I am sure you'd have a good chance at the turboprop regionals or the various jet operators here. Some companies won't accept an ATPL conversion and want all the Aus ATPL subjects done. You'd have to talk to the various companies.
Last but certainly not least, you'll have to be able to emigrate to Oz/NZ.
You'll find the aviation market a lot smaller in Oz than in the EU.
So, check out the immigration site and the CASA site for the immigration and licence info.
