Are there jobs out there for me too!
Is there a chance I could find a job at the ripe old age of 33? I am looking to convert my FAA ATP to a JAA ATPL. First I would like to see if it is worth my time and money. Are there a lot of jobs out there? If so I only need one of them. Thanks

Your chances are good. Not sure what types you've got and time on them.
Check out the CAA-SRG website, in particular the LASORS section. It has all the steps laid out.
Firstly,
Right of abode/EU passport. Got to get that sorted.
Medical. Can only be done at Gatwick CAA's office. ~240 quid.
Theory. This assumes you don't have +1500 hours In command on +30 tonne aircraft etc.
14 theory exams. Can be done distance learning. ~720 quid to the CAA.
1-2000 pounds for the Distance learning. More expensive to go full time.
Flying. This is the variable. Do you have 500 hours (Fo or command) on a JAR 25 aka FAR 25 aircraft? If so, you can do a CAA (~600 quid) observed check ride. (Check ride is extra $)
If not, then you can do a type rating on a JAR 25 aircraft and have the CAA observe the check.
Or, if you don't have 500 hours MULTICREW, then you'll have to do the abridged IR and I *think* a CPL flight. (Don't quote me on that part)
So, you really have to cost out the flying and your living expenses.

Thanks for the information. I have a U.S. passport and the right to live and work in the UK. This is a permanent resident visa. Will this be acceptable? I have a B-737 type with Zero flightime and a Falcon 50 type with about 500 hours FO. Most of my time is in the SAAB-340 with about 1900 hours FO. Thanks again.

With a 737 rating you should be able to get something.
Loganair are about to recruit Saab 340 f/o's so might be worth checking them out if the 737 search does not bear fruit... good luck (you will probably need it... )
Edited to add that if your ratings are FAA then you are out of luck, you will need to be typed rated again, but the Saab time might be handy for Yogi.

Mad Dog,
I would not quit my job yet. I went through the medical and the exams last winter and was able to hang on to my job. That is the key right now as it is really hit and miss. The job market is moving, but slowly. Many think it will pick up into 2004 but who knows. Get the exams and medical done first. You can do it while flying. I am looking at completing the CPL/IR conversion after xmas but will still hang on to my gig............BTW I have 3000 hours all turbo/twin and multi-crew.
Anyone care to comment? Should I put off the flight training till things really pick up or get it done..........???
Dog PM me if you have any questions. The people who have gone through this will give you the "Real" advice on what you need to do and what it will cost.
Cheers
