sponsorship at 29
I'm a 29 year old IT worker with a bit of cash in the bank and a desire to make it as a pilot.
What I would like to know is, are there any sponsorships (full or partial) out there or on the horizon, which someone of my age would be eligible to apply for? (My savings will only take me so far). The only ones I know about seem to have upper age limits of 28 at the most.
I have a degree etc and experience of working for a commercial company, also I am 5 hours into a ppl.
Thanks

Im 29, have a degree & am due my PPL test tomorrow (wish for good weather) & have already started to study for my ATPL's. However I feel that there would be more chance of Christina & Britney fighting in a pool of chocolate sauce trying to decide which could have me first than getting a company to sponsor me, Not being negative just realistic, if your dream is to become a pilot then the chances are that you will have to stump up the cash yourself………..
Good Luck

Sponsorship opportunities are very thin on the ground at the moment so the chances of getting one are remote. Having researched this area a while ago I couldn't find any airline, even in the boom days that would sponsor anyone over 27 or 28.
As YYZ says, you will have to join the rest of us *oldies*and fund it yourself I am afraid.
Good luck with it.

Its beyond me why any airline needs to sponsor .. only the other day Aer Lingus "management " informed the pilot body that they intend to make 76 pilots redundant over the next 5 months.
Add this to the hundreds of other type rated pilots it just doesnt make econominc sense.
The airlines that make money these days dont sponsor they
get the pilot to pay instead its cheaper...

In your 30th year !!
Keep going with the PPL. Obtain a class one medical, and then proceed down the modular route.
At 29, there is not even a remote chance of sponsorship.
Sorry to disappoint you.

Unlikely yes-particularly in the current climate; however, not impossible. The upper age restrictions imposed on sponsored candidates is adjusted from course to course for a variety of reasons.
I know of several individuals operating for major U.K. carriers who were sponsored whilst between 29 and 34.
The advice from ecj is good though, in the short term.

Kula-Stay with the IT Job!!!!!!!!
Hey Kula!
I have changed careers a few times, I am a 33 commercial Pilot, I would swap places with you 2morow!
I was like you and wanted to fly, thats what this industry trives on,"suckers" like you and me! This is the truth, sorry if I have shattered your dreams!
My advice, go to New York and make lots of Dollars, thats what I should have done, Not sit in an alluminium Tube, flying in ****ie Weather, wondering when my next day is off? and Knowing that good people like yourself are willing to take my place!
Stick with the IT Market!!!!!!!!!!
Get other options from other com pilots!

Just for interest sake, I would like to know which UK carriers did ab-initio sponsorship for that age group; and when did this take place?
I know Gillair sponsored guys back in about 1986 for their IR for those who had already been instructing with a CPL only.

ecj - these were not ab-initio. Full or partial sponorship is referred to in the original question.
AirUK/KLMuk, Britannia and British Midland (pre bmi) did offer a bursary to older candidates occasionally.
It's worth appreciating that some companies want a little life experience and longer term loyallty. An F/O joining at age 30ish is more likely to stay with an employer and see seniority mature = better value for money for the employer. Not that I'm suggesting that people leave BA (although some do for lifestyle), but the grass is often greener after a few years.
The current pilot training environment is different to how it was ten odd years ago when the likes of CTC were really just starting to emerge. Their style of selection criteria is likely to become the industry benchmark.
