Arrow Non Airline Jobs?

Hi everyone,

I’m just about finished with my flight training and would like to hear from anyone who knows of any company that may have the opportunity of building flight hrs?

Pay isn’t that important at the moment, I know about PPJN/IPA etc. but would really like to have a go at something like aerial photography etc. I am a keen Photographer, this would combine both interests.

I would also love to do any other type of aerial work with or without CPL requirement!

If anyone has done/doing this I would love to hear from them.

You don’t really hear about these jobs as they are perceived as being bottom of the ladder but I would have thought they were a little bit fun.

Any info would be kindly received

Cheers

A/C

Hi there Aircart,

Nothing wrong with any of those 'bottom of the ladder' jobs, and glad you're being realistic enough to look there.

There are quite a few outfits that conduct aerial photography work. Hunt around the airfields close to you and you should find them. Usually operate out of the smaller fields as it helps to keep the costs down, and quite frankly a C150 doesn't need 12000' of tarmac.

I'm lucky enough to be working for such a company, and even more fortunate to be in a situation where it is a multi-crew operation i.e; I fly and the photographer does his thing. I know there are many companies (Skyviews are one) where it is mostly single crew ops, and I would have reservations about the safety aspect of operating at lowish level whilst trying to photograph targets and fly the a/c. My own local area of operation has a high density of low level fast jet traffic, and I think you would be suicidal to work single crew here.

Also, watch out for any strange methods of payment. Some companies will pay you for the photographs you take rather than the flying you do, and will try to screw you over at every opportunity on grounds of 'quality'. Do a search and you will see what I mean.

However, that said, the work is a lot of fun. The flying isn't necessarily challenging as it is mostly VFR due to the nature of the work, but you need eyes in the back of your head. You may be fortunate enough to travel countrywide (or even internationally with people like Cooper Aerial Surveys), which is great for exploring new airfields and meeting people for building those all important networks. The pay won't be great, but as a way of buiding hours, it will save you a fortune. My own feelings are that it is preferable to instructing as you get to fly the a/c rather than have some student trying to kill you every day, but not necessarily as well-regarded or as regular.

I enjoy what I do immensely, but wish it paid better. However, my employer (technically I'm self-employed as some kind of tax/NI dodge methinks) has a 100% record of his pilots moving into the airlines, so I'm happy to sit tight and keep looking for that elusive vacancy.

Good luck and stay safe.
