career in ground ops

Hiya, wonder if anyone can help me. Unlike most I don't wanna be a pilot but have just finished avionics engineering degree at uni. I'm interested in getting into airport operations or aircraft maintenance but don't know what to go for!
I've been thinking of applying to operations duty manager posts and also dispatch agents as well as maintenance engineers. Really want to know more about these three job types, anyone tell me more?
anyone been there and done that and if so how and did they enjoy it?

Thanks

Nikki-su

Maintenance Engineers

For engineering, you will need to undertake further study!!
Your degree covers different things to that required for maintenance. (When i did it, it was more design based).

You will need to go to an approved school to get an Engineers Licence.

With yr degree as it is now, you maybe able to get some work within maintenance organisations, but nothing "hands on" as such.

*I stand to be corrected though! Try posting in Engineers and Technicians for better reply!

Angel

I don't want to sound mercenary but there is a considerable difference in payscales for those career paths later on.

Good links above and not flying the crab flag as I was a green and brown job myself but have you tried the RAF who will along with Smiths, BAE etc probably give you some of the best training in the world and actually allow you to be able to afford to eat before the decade ends.

Which may allow you to be kind to all the starving pilots we'll have by then

Oh also are you sure you want maintenance and not design as again quite seperate paths. Worth a look on the mil forum for some advice as well as tech.

Good luck

It is highly unlikely that you will be able to gain an Ops Duty Manager position straight off. The usual route is to work your way up through an airline/handling agent, starting as check in staff or dispatcher, then ops controller after a few years then Duty Manager.

Ground handling work is very low paid, long unsociable hours, for little thanks. A handling agent such as Servisair or Groundstar will offer a starting salary for check in of about £5.50 per hour, £6 for dispatch.

Your future lies in engineering. Go down that route - you are far too highly educated to be sat on a check in desk (no disrespect intended).
