DHL - Leipzig base?
Hi Chaps,
I'd like to find out a little more regarding DHL and their bases, or roster. Some non DHL crew members I know tell me if you are fortunate enough to get a job there you must live in Leipzig, and than there are others who say the roster allows you to live anywhere in Europe. I'm hoping if possible for someone to clear this up for me. Must one reside in/nearby to Leipzig or can one live outside Leipzig and commute to work? RC |
I don't work for DHL but you can commute on their jumpseat if you work there. Of course you need a place to stay at when you have a standby duty.
I work for another cargo operator and I don't live on base. |
Berlin would be about 2 hours away.
|
Always need some form of local accommodation for layovers/sby etc. If you choose to commute and not to make Leipzig your main residence then you won’t be offered a full time roster. Most likely 10/12 or 11/12 depending on where you actually live. Also be aware that regardless of your domicile there is a liability for German social security.
At the moment I’m not aware of any plans for recruitment. rgds |
How does the part-time roster translate in terms of income?
|
Mmm. Multiply the full time pay by the appropriate fraction?
|
Recruitment is closed at the moment anyway, so if you haven't applied yet then your application will probably not be accepted at the moment, DHK has about 2000 applications on hold.
About commuting, as DH said, you will be offered a part time contract if you decide not to live in Leipzig, after one year you then can get a full time contract as a commuter if you can prove that your commuting works fine in regards of fatigue and getting to Leipzig. Best solution usually is the 9and5 roster. |
The facts about part time for the first year if commuting could be incorrect. When you say DHL, do you mean DHL Air UK LEJ base or EAT Leipzig. The two are very different.
|
Yes we know, but as you can see I was talking about DHL Air UK (DHK) which is the one who requires you to live in Leipzig for a full time contract.
|
Thanks very much, all very useful responses. I didn't even realise there were two separate DHL contracts based in Leipzig.
I understand they aren't looking yet like. As some here have said, there are over 2000 CVs on their desk, but don't forget those same 2000 C.Vs are also on everyone else's desk at the moment not just DHL. |
True, but DHK is the only one at the moment hiring for next year. ;)
|
Are we really?
|
Looks like.;)
|
So DHK is recruiting pilots to fly the 757 which are going to EAT.
That really makes sense.:} |
There is quite possibly going to be some recruitment next year.
not sure on numbers. |

I think it’s a sarcastic reply to another post which has now been removed.
|
Yes it was.;)
|
I would be surprised to see any recruitment before 3 years from now. But if they really do earlier (I am not catching the irony and English isn't my first language), so be it.

DHL Air UK pilot jobs news for airline pilots and aviation schools (pilotjobsnetwork.com)
Positive trend and hiring in 2021 according to PPJN. Good news if true, can anybody confirm this? |
A small amount of recruitment (numbers uncertain). Calls for interview will probably be based on recommends from current employees.
|
Still some form of recruitment and that's nice to see. Hopefully more to follow everywhere in a few months.
|
Any news for those who applied with recommendations from current employees of DHL UK?
Or is all recruitment on hold? |
Closing date was 31.12. so I guess they will now review the applications and then figure out how many pilots will be required with the consequences of Brexit.

I think someone in DHK hr is keen to keep ppjn updated - latest update yesterday. My reading of this is ‘we are recruiting a small number of pilots this year. We can now fill those spaces from our preselected hold pool and employee recommends. Please don’t send us any more CVs’.
There is no running commentary within the company. These are my best guesses. I may be wrong! HtH |

What are the rumours on the initial consequences of Brexit?
|
Well, we’re still working. TBH at the moment my biggest worry is eating up Schengen days at work limiting my opportunities for European holidays.
|
5th freedom seems to be an issue at the moment, but that should be solved within a few weeks. With a UK and a EU base employment will be a bit limited as changes between the bases will be very difficult.
|
By who is the newly acquired 738F going to be operated at DHL?

No, there is no change with the bases or the rotations so far, I don't know which rotations are actually affected or even if any.
There might be 1-2 rotations which have been changed to EAT and others to DHK due to that, but that happens all the time anyway. |

Mr Angry. Can’t argue with that
|
Rotations. Well, I’m in my 19th year of this and I still don’t really know. Does the rotation go with the crew? So I work by reporting and finishing at EMA, usually by jump seat to/from LEJ over a multi day period. Someone else will report and finish in LEJ.
Does the rotation belong to the ac? The ac on any night might go eg WAW LEJ NTE, but a crew would start on that WAW LEJ and then pick up another ac eg LEJ MAD. Apart from Sun night an ac would rarely start and/or finish in LEJ (or EMA or BRU). The ac might go EDI EMA LEJ MXP. One crew do EDI EMA, another EMA LEJ and yet another LEJ MXP. Clear as mud. All I really know that is important is that our 757 operation continues on its merry little way. |
Do you know guys if they will call for assessment all recommendations? or just a few
|
I guess just a few, I can imagine they got more than 100 recommendations.

As for the new recommendations, I have no clue if they have been calling some one. |
Anybody know if EAT, or DHL Bahrain is or will be hiring?
I read somewhere that DHL Bahrain was looking for Captains. |
