Sorry to thread creep. Received an email today from HR at DHL advising me that if I wanted to apply for a position on the 757 fleet, I now have to go through an Agency rather than DHL direct. Is this an attempt by management to split the pilot group now that DHL has BALPA recognition?

If its for the LHS, I think BALPA may have put the stoppers on DEC. If its for RHS, not sure, but I'm sure rumors will be flying around soon.
With regards to Italy, BGY is the easier gateway if you are jump seating, as there are plenty of flights. DHL do operate from AOI & PSA to BGY. I think CIA, BLQ & TSF are to LEJ, but don't quote me. |

Lifestyle varies somewhat on who you speak to. Since last early last winter we have been under crewed, leading to an unsustainable roster, both for the company, and the pilots in terms of fatigue etc. However, the crew numbers are being increased, and BALPA have been formally recognised!
Overall, its night freight. Trips vary between 2-7(ish) days away from home. Nights from 2-10 (ish) hours duty, 1-3 sectors (normally) with lots of sitting around. What you need, and we havent been getting recently is time to recover at home. Quite a few on 8 off in 28. If you're planning on commuting to LEJ, it takes it toll. Not sure how the contracts work, but if its guaranteed jump seats, this will take a lot of stress off, and hopefully provide more time at home. Not the best, far off the worst, and could quite easily be one of the better jobs. |

As I understand you are only talking about DHL UK above??? Any EAT pilots able to shed some light on their lifestyle regarding roster, network, pay, hotels downroute etc. please?! Or is it all the same compared to DHL UK?? Is there also recruitment forseeable at EAT in the near future?? Do all BRU based pilots keep their base and shuttle to LEJ now? Couldn't find too much about EAT, mostly DHK in the freight dogs forum. Thanks for your help!! Best regards |
Yup, that was for DHL UK. Can't comment on EAT too much, apart from they have a block roster (7on 7 off I think)

Come on then, but I only can give you an impression from the A300 fleet. We work under ACL but still contracted by EAT Belgium. We work indeed some kind of 7/7, sometimes 8/6. As a Bru based crew member ACL is positioning us to and from Lej on last Off day/first Off day with a rest day somewhere in between(most off the time in Lej in the weekend) so you are not going over the 7 days consecutive duty. If you are lucky everything is within your 7 days duty. The roster is quite stable but we don't fly a lot. We hear already months rumors about more flights for the A300 but there it stops. One Fo who was dismissed last year by EAT is hired back by ACL directly Lej based.
At the moment we still have our Bru base but personally I think it is a matter of time (1 year, 2 years???). Although we know already that every upgrade, type change etc. will be Lej based. Regards |

Are there still newhires on the A300 Fleet as well or are all newbies supposed to go on the 757?? Or any new hires at all? Are there plans to replace the A300s with a "newer" type? And finally, are your hotels downtown when enroute? Questions over questions... rgds |
As far as I know there is no hiring.
Hotels are the same for the whole DHL network (EAT,ACL, DHK). Sometimes ate the airport sometimes downtown, it depends. Most of the hotels are very good. The replacement of the A300 will come, but we don't know when and what type. Regards |
I heard a rumour last week (this is Pprune after all) that more 767s are coming, but they may be to replace some of the high time 757s.
Also that a product support deal has been agreed with Airbus until 2018. Also that new hires with DHL UK are only being offered 12 month contracts. Is this so that after 1 year a German contract will be offered with EAT Gmbh.? Only rumours! |

Are the routes flown by the A300's increasing? Is Tel Aviv back on the Airbus? Is it a busy workweek for the A300 crews?

Not much moving on the Airbus. No new routes whatsoever.(My guess maybe for the winter schedule...) Mind you as well that the guy they rehired was solely to replace a leaving one. And probably same will happen soon. But they still have a couple of guys sitting at home who got dismissed last year...
Phase out of the A300 is probably end 2012 but as we all know, things tend to change in aviation. The brand new 767's coming (3) have nothing to do with that. My impression is that the atmosphere on the A300 is not so great at the moment. As there is a real lack of information what will happen once they start the phase out. Work week on the airbus is fairly busy, however the Lej based one's tend to fly a little bit less compared to the bru based ones. Generally speaking min 10 to max 20-ish sectors per 7 days. Ofcourse everybody has to do his share of standby weeks aswell. Fixed pay is at eat a bit less (due to belgian taxes) than dhk, but perdiems/flight pay (whatever you want to call it) is more. However I've heard stories that starting pay at dhk is not so good, but I do not know if there is any truth to that. Then ofcourse there are the rumours about the two companies merging one day or another. But can't see that happening to soon... Plenty of rumours around ;-) |

Latest rumour today is that 2 more A300s to be back in service by October, currently 12 in use.
Current ops have 10 A/C routes each night, Sometimes 11. I can't see fleet retirement starting in 2012 unless there is another financial crisis. At least I hope not as I would like another 5 years in the middle seat before I retire. |

I thought I bring this thread up again. I've just applied at EAT through interpersonal. Heard about a flexible roster coming?? The 7/7 roster seems to be commutable, do the DHK guys complain about commuting on their flex roster? I could imagine you check in on your first day at 0005 and check out on the last at 2355?? Don't get me wrong, I'm just trying to figure out, if it is possible to commute and leave the family where they are happy... In case I get the Job! Thanks for your help!! |
EAT Brussels have a fixed roster pattern which is 8/6, the 7/7 is on the Airbus which is flown on the Irish register and crewed by AIr contractors. The rumour is that EAT germany will not have the same as it is seen as less productive than a flex roster. EAT Germany will also have lower terms and conditions than the old Belgium company had, whilest the employee enjoy the higher tax regime in Germany. Regardless of where you live if you are based in LEJ the Geramns will expect you to pay tax and NI in Germany. How that will affect tax situation of those that commute in from other countries will be interesting to see

FO Hours
In response to an earlier question about FO experience.
It is very varied, I was with a Captain with 12000 hours on 75/76 and an FO with 8000 hours on 75 and biz jets. I know a few low hours FO's that have been accepted with less than a 1000 hours total (me included) and then some with 5000+ on 767, some have a lot less. I think it's if your face fits then your in. I found that attitude counted for a great deal (that's my thoughts anyway) and I can see how a "can do" attitude will get you in good positions in any interview. No the numbers on ppjn are not correct. It's less than that. Also no more "per diems" as such. But now also taxed.
They hire people without experience, because somebody with experience will not accept such a bad deal... |

I've a boat load of questions and I'm happy to buy a few beers in exchange if anyone's at a loose end near EMA. I've been chasing an F/O job at EAT for a while now and have just been advised by Interpersonal that I've been released to the interview (hopefully EAT will rubber stamp it now). Without wanting to get too far ahead of myself, can anyone give an idea of good study resources for the DLR tests at Hamburg. I've not found much online yet aside from the one week prep courses (which I'm considering). And, again not counting any chickens, can anyone give an idea of lifestyle in LEJ? The salary doesn't seem a lot higher than my current pay at a UK regional (accounting for what I calculate German tax to be). How does this equate to standard of living in terms of accommodation etc? How does the new roster work out? If anyone could paint a general picture of the life there it'd be great. Still pretty sure it's my top choice. Thanks again. |
