Best Freight Dog Bars in the US

What would you guys rank as the top 3 bars for Freight Dogs in what cities?

BelArgUSA 1st Oct 2008 22:12

MIA

Tom's NFL on 36th Street - just opposite of PanAm Academy.
Also 1 block North of 36th Street on Curtiss Parkway, 5 minutes walk from Tom's NFL.
Cannot remember the name, is the only bar there, on the LH side.

I'd second Tom's.

Bar's

How does Bryson's sound? Been there for ever!:):):):):)

BelArgUSA 1st Oct 2008 23:01

MIA yes again...

Bryson's fully correct - Food excellent, less expensive than Tom's NFL...
Often stays open very late, later than Tom's -
Even has a liquor store, next door, same management, to bring bottles back to room.
Sorry - Old fart here, could not remember with my alzheimer's...

Excellent place for debriefing and inquire who's hiring...
:D
Happy (burp...!) contrails

Rock_On 1st Oct 2008 23:28

KILN, PANC, KPIT and KGLD.

1. BW3s in Wilmington, Ohio - KILN. (Quite a place!)
2. F Street Station in Anchorage, Alaska - PANC.
3. Darwin's Theory in Anchorage, Alaska - PANC
4. Wings Suds and Spuds in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania - KPIT

5. Not a bar, but an awsome place to eat in Goodland, Kansas of all places (for the small freight dogs) - KGLD Butterfly Cafe

Roadtrip 2nd Oct 2008 00:30

Hurricane Bar & Grill
365 N Royal Poinciana Blvd
Miami, FL

Close to the 36th Street scene.

Great steaks, good prices, great staff.

Beaver_Driver 2nd Oct 2008 02:47

I would reconsider the "F" Street station. It has become a hang out in the later hours for the younger gents who are chasing the young wait-staff. Unfortunately the young guys are not happy sharing their bar with old fuddy duddy pilots and have decided to run us out. The latest was a UPS pilot attacked several weeks ago.

BelArgUSA 2nd Oct 2008 04:10

LAX

Not been to LAX for long time - (2003) - there was...
xxx
(1) The Proud Bird, near threshold of runways 25L/R - (Restaurant + Bar)
(used to be owned by retired Continental pilot)
(2) The bar in Hacienda Hotel, on S. Sepulveda - 1/2 mi from airport
(their restaurant La Mariposa is open all night, inexpensive)
(3) 1 block South of Hacienda, same side, small bar owned by Chinese lady
(cannot recall name - inexpensive food and beer - the only bar there)

F Street in PANC is being boycotted by UPS freight dogs. One of our own got cold cocked there last week. F Street Station is nothing but a thug hangout now. Be wary.

Sticky Fingers at VHHH.

SMT Member 2nd Oct 2008 08:27

Durty Harry's in FLL - European beers, great wings & scampis, hot (Swedish) waitress.

Left Coaster 2nd Oct 2008 08:35

F Street running their patrons out? Not the first time...seems they like to S**t where they work...never one of my favourites...the "talent" (staff) is quick to hold out a hand for tips and if they think you're short...out ya go and don't come back...great service! Guess we gotta put up with the Brew House!

The Pilot House MIA is closed since long ago - maybe over 5 years by now.
Most guys I knew as customers seemed to have moved to Bryson's.
36th Street is no longer what it used to be 10-20-30 years ago...
You should have known the 1970s...
xxx
Even Tom's NFL has changed a lot since they enlarged the interior.
What was a "crew only" bar is now mixed with non-aviation people.
The "Corrosion Corner" is long time gone. I think it has moved to Opa-Locka.
Certainly there must be some bar around there.
xxx
When I do training, with my guys, I now buy 2 or 3 cases of "Presidente" beer.
As instructor, I get a suite at the "Mainstay" facing the Best Western.
Order some pizza, and we do our "debriefings" in my place. Like being home.
If we meet a nice bunch, we invite them to join us.
The only way I can stretch my Argentino Pesos...

Too bad about Tom's. Good call on the Presidente!

neil armstrong 3rd Oct 2008 23:37

Good old Tom's NFL
We once had a party there and where joking around!
The Bartender thought we where fighting and before we knew it we where driven out of the bar by police officers and dogs.
so everybody (about 60 people) got into there cars (lots of people rather drunk) and drove to a bar with Liquor store beside it (could have been Bryson's).
The police followed us because they thought we would cause trouble again.
Only 2 people where evicted for being underage for the rest we partied until late.

Good old days, have left the freightdogging business a month ago!

Bryson's/MIA

I attended Riddle when it was in Miami in 1963 and Bryson's was one of the best pilots bars in Miami then. Thousands of pilots have bellied up there. Used to be a good place to pick up a 6 crew. I left Miami for retirement in central Florida. Glad to hear it's still there. Used to live in the motel across the street when it was The Green Mansions Apartments. Had one of the best blues clubs in Miami downstairs named the Mau Mau Lounge and Bryson's across the street. Nothing wrong with that.:)

BelArgUSA 4th Oct 2008 08:22

The motel across the street from Bryson's is still there - name changed...?
All I can say - it is the lowest price motel in the area - low weekly rates too.
They have a bed... 25 watts light bulbs... TV occasionally works... shower with water...
The opposite corner had "Mi Tierra" - a little Cuban restaurant. Closed now.
My Argentina boys had language wars with the Cubans there... was fun.
Then, throw-in some Dominicans and Puerto Ricans. Is that Spanish...?
Then with my French language, try to communicate in Haitian Creole...
xxx
United Nations of airlines... right for that.
Our Brits here have their pubs to play darts. And we had 36th Street.
I retire myself, next month, will never be back there, and will miss it.
xxx
Miami - Almost like being in the USA. They even speak English, at times.

Good to Stay in touch, we all are a great aviation family. We forget sometimes!:)

I second Sticky Fingers in HKG!

fesmokie 4th Oct 2008 14:46

Way back when, Brysons was the place to hang until the wee hours and hopefully you were picked to crew a DC-6 for a quick run South and back. Sometimes the crew didn't have allot of time to sober up.:E

Durty Harry's in FLL - European beers, great wings & scampis, hot (Swedish) waitress.
Not anymore.
Durty Harry's changed name and owners a couple of years ago.
They called it Shipwrecked for a while but the service and the food was pretty lousy towards the end.
Now the doors are closed and the place boarded up.

Ditto on the Hacienda next to LAX and the Thai/Chinese joint down the street.

Angel`s Playmate 5th Oct 2008 09:17

KMIA-Mike`s Bar. Unfortunately does not exist no more:{
PANC-Snow Goose or that Irish Pub which is on the same road as Darwin`s Theory. Forgot the name.
KLAX-Wild Goose...on Aviation Blvd :E

Cheers

jetdrvr 6th Oct 2008 07:57

Mike's in Miami...

Wasn't that the great little bar with the Pitts cowling and prop coming out of the back wall? Been a long time. Great place for cold draft.

Desert185 7th Oct 2008 23:08

PANC

If you just want to drink or quietly chat with someone, Club Paris can't be beat. I still like the Fancy Moose @ the Millennium Hotel. Humpy's is too noisy and so is the Brewhouse. Snow Goose is OK.

The Bayhouse

Is the ABC still there in PANC? Good beer and I seem to remember some kind of entertainment too.

Best Freight Dog Bars in the US

Toms NFL Bar on NW 36th Street Miami is under new management and business is booming.
The new owner is a keen football (soccer) fan and showing Premier league games. I watched Celtic V MUFC yesterday and the atmosphere was great. Happy hour hour from 3 till 7 pm ensures a good trade from local Aviators. Top class friendly service.

Willit Run 7th Nov 2008 04:37

The joint that was one block south of the Hacienda in LAX is closed/torn down. The Thai lady, Nit, was subjected to the inflated rent of the land owner, and a bunch of locals and freightdogs could/would not be able to support Nit, so she very reluctently shut the place down. The building I guess has been demolished since. That was a true freightdog bar!

The "Ter Streep" in Ostend Belgium; "Diggers" in Bahrain, The "Bayhouse" in JFK,

And one or two others I'm sure I'm forgetting!
