Dhl aviation bahrain; corporate irresponsibility.

Dear Mr Appel

The intention of this email is to highlight the Corporate Irresponsibility of DHL Aviation Bahrain by providing details of the Head of Flight Operations disregard for DHLs Global Conduct Policy.

To quote a report from the International Transport Workers Federation, May 2012
" most important, all evidence indicates at DHL, outside of Europe, systematically aims to
Limit freedom of association, collective bargaining and the presence of a Union within its
workforce. They accomplish this by creating an atmosphere of fear at work through
Intimidation and harrasment."

TERMS and CONDITIONS
Yearly remuneration increases and bonuses between crew members have not been consistent. Certain crew members enjoy better increases and bonuses depending on their relationships with management.

Medical cover provided to expatriate crew does not compare to medical cover provided to management and is found wanting in areas of dental, optical, maternity and coverage outside of Bahrain. Management has promised reviews of the medical policy for nearly 2 years, but this is a stalling tactic with no promise of any change.

Schooling is provided, however this has not been reviewed for over 3 years and does not cover eduction for older children, no education allowance is provided to children under 5 years of age. Annual increases in education range between 5-7%.

DHLs security dept has advised expatriates to live in certain areas of Bahrain due to the escalating political problems. Once again no review of housing allowances has taken place, thus making it difficult for crews with families to be able to afford these areas advised by the security department.

It has become policy for DHL Bahrain to force crew members to split up their annual leave; however, funds provided are only adequate to purchase one return ticket annually.

HUMAN RESOURCES
During 2013 DHL Aviation Bahrain saw changes in the operating fleet and crew requirements. The retirement of the B727 led to the move of crew onto the B 757. Over the last 2 1/2 years management have transfered a number of pilots; however the process has varied with some pilots requiring assessments and others not. Management has used this process to remove pilots from DHL based on unsuitability and in ability to train even though there is no evidence to base this on with some pilots having been employed by DHL Bahrain for many years. This has been considered a move for the head of flight operations to remove pilots that he has had personal issues with. While these pilots were dismissed, DHL Aviation Bahrain both employed and promoted outside crew who were well below the experience levels of some of the crew who had been dismissed.

HEAD OF FLIGHT OPERATIONS AND SAFETY
The head of flight operations operates with the same style of management; carelessly, recklessly and with full immunity from any form of recourse.

"We promote a culture of constructive dialog, both between employees and managers
as well as between executive management and employee representatives. We
Respect human rights within our area of influence and operate our business in such
a way as to make us an exemplary employer. In doing so, we are keeping up with the
Principles of the United Nations Global Compact. We respect the principles of the 1998
Declaration by the international labour organisation on the fundamental rights and
principles of work inline with national laws and customs."

2010 DP-DHL Corporate responsibility report

"Corporate responsibility is an integral part of our corporate strategy 2015, which is
Geared towards long-term success."
Interview with CEO Frank Appel 2009.

Numerous attempts have been made to partake in dialogue with the head of flight operations as per the above quoted corporate policy. All attempts were met with aggression , potential disciplinary action leading to potential job loss. An example of this is the dismissal of a number of the B727 pilots.

"In a company were people are the most important asset, the dialogue with
employees and their representatives is indispensable"
Rite Hendrix, DP-DHL executive vice president

The annonaminity of this email is due to the fear of inevitable intimidation and retribution to the crews by the head of flight operations.
