Luanda (LAD)

Does anyone know what is happening in LAD, heard a rumour they can only accept narrow body aircraft due to a taxiway issue?

Cheers

Operated an MD-11 into there, Atlas picked up the Sonair contract. This was years ago but there was a need to back taxi. If I remember correctly, one taxiway ran half the length of the runway and it was an NDB approach with special instructions due to possible small arms fire at the time. They had lost several russian aircraft that refused to fly out over the ocean to climb/decend to save fuel. The Angolans claimed mechanical failures but the odds are they were shot down.

Keep us posted with the 747F...
Sonair flies oil workers from houston to Luanda, oddly enough Atlas seems to be operating a 744 pax bird. I knew it was a money maker for WOA, they even converted the aircraft to mostly business class for the charter, took out seats at a time for a preposed wetbar that I did not get to see. Suppose the pax demand grew or WOA wanted the aircraft for military charter$$$
