You should see the cr@p on the R&N thread about this. They're on to page 3 already with little of note and lots of "wait for the investigation".

Nice to see they both got out - hospital's better than one other potential outcome.

What fire suppression does LH have in it's MD11s?

All MD11s (but 747, 777,767 etc. are the same) have class "C" lower compartments, that means there are heat and fire detectors and fire extinguisher bottles,
but the main deck is a class "E". There are heat and fire detectors (36 in the md11) but the only way to extinguish a fire is by closing the air supply leaving the compartment with no oxygen (helped by increasing the cabin altitude) there are also some portable fire extinguishers but they are of little help.
This equipment leaves all the pilots with many dubts about the probability to effectively win over a fire in the main deck, but the size of the compartment does not allow the installation of fire ext. bottles

@davidaz68
There is only smoke detectors in the main cargo compartments! However, you are right, there is no fireextinguishersystem for the maindeck! But, in this case, there was no fire before touchdown!

I have never flown MD11...but in the DC10-30F and in the B744ERF there is at least one portable fire extinguisher bottle with an extensive hose.

Anyway, for operating those portable fire extinguisher there should be at least an additional pilot/load master/engineer on board.

Fire suppression upper deck

Actually, to be specific, there is not AUTOMATIC fire suppression for the upper deck of the MD11, fire suppression is manually accomplished by the flight crew with equipment located forward of the smoke barrier.
