FedEx has more 727's than any other aircraft. There is a STC for noise abatemtnt (stage 4) and the company makes money with the aircraft. Eventually they're going to be replaced with the 757 but that is at least 7 years out. In addition to the 727, Fed Ex flys the DC-10, MD-10 (a DC 10 converted without the FE and a glass cockpit), MD-11, A-300-600, and the A-310. The first of the 757's will be arriving next month with the first ones going to Paris and China. The 777 is due next year. There are 80 757's on order and 16 777's with a possibility that there could be an additional order for the 777.

are you a fedex pilot ?
how many B757 are gonna be based in CDG ? What kind of routes ? I am just aware of the STN-CDG route.

I agree with your lament on the move.
I cannot say for sure how many of the 757's will be going to Europe but the company is trying to put a definite stamp on the European operation as thye already have in Asia.
On another vein. Keep an eye out on the world economy. Since aviation lags both up and down, I forsee a lot of the now high flying outfits like Kalitta, Atlas, Polar, Tradewinds, etal doing some major downsizing or even closing. Same old cyclical thing that has been in aviation for all these years. Am I ever glad I am over 60 now. A lot of these opertions depend on other carriers and the government to make a dime. That, my friend, is going to change.

So any idea what the impact of Europe-based FedEx 757s would be on Feeder operators? Unless FedEx wants to open longer Feeder routes beyond practical turboprop range, I can't see many current intra-European routes that would justify a 2/3 empty 757!

I agree with that last statement. I have no idea what the company has in its mind but you can rest assured their plans are well justified and not "pie in the sky". Fed Ex never got to where they are by being dumb.

Because if you are, you can forget it! The current FedEx Feeder service to/from CDG is operated by an Air Contractors ATR72, but it will shortly be replaced by an N-reg FedEx B757, with US crews.

does anyone have a rough idea of any other routes that the 757s will be doing ? I know a few of the Buses will be pulled back to the US but some routes like the DUB-STN-CDG will still surly require the A300 due to the very high payloads especially coming out of CDG into STN/DUB.

FDX is currently not hiring. The good news for those wishing to be based outside the US is that they couldn't fill the FO slots for the new bases in CDG or HKG and thus when hiring resumes expect to get a foreign assignment.

So if FedEx is aiming to base some Flightdeck crews at Paris-CDG, the company has to keep in mind that it will not be possible to give any sorts of US working contracts, but French contracts only.
Is the strong FedEx pilots Union happy with that restriction ??
The only way to avoid that would be to position the FedEx pilots from the US to europe for a 10-15 days shift, like UPS do, I think.
