Northwest Cargo adds 11th 747 in time for cherries

ANCHORAGE, May 9 (Reuters) - Northwest Cargo's eleventh Boeing 747 will come on line next week just in time for charter lift of cherries from California through Anchorage to Japan.
"The eleventh freighter will come on line next week," Mike McKinley, air cargo manger of Northwest Cargo at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport told Reuters. "Just in time for a charter from San Francisco. It looks like cherries are going to be big this year."
According to Northwest officials the all cargo airline hauled its first shipment of Japan bound cherries on Monday May 7, but other charter flights are pending for later in the month.
Northwest Cargo's McKinley also said the airline increased its flights on May 7 from 32 flights a week to 44 landings at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.
"We are getting the first of two new freighters next week with the twelfth coming on line in June," added McKinley.
Northwest bought the freighters last year as former passenger aircraft and had them fitted as 747-200F aircraft for cargo.
Currently Northwest transloads four aircraft at the Williams-Lynx Alaska CargoPort at Anchorage, and will raise that to five sometime in July, according to McKinley.
