Atlas Furloughes More?
What's happening at Atlas. Rumor is that the company is furloughing in punishment for voting down the tentative agreement (TA) contract.. .. .Also heard that Gemini just voted for ALPA representation by heavy majority.

Don't know much about what's going on there at Atlas but it does sound a little suspicious doesn't it? The other half of Atlas...Polar Air Cargo, seems to be going great guns with the military business. As a matter of fact they are hiring first officers right now. I'm willing to bet they won't be hiring furloughed Atlas pilots.. .. .As far as the Gemini ALPA vote is concerned, the number was approximately 60% for ALPA representation. God knows they need the help as they are parking and furloughing also. Wonder what kind of retribution will go on there?

Heard a rumor that the Carlisle Group is ready to pull out of its investment in Gemini. If that happens, Gemini will have to operate on cash flow. Could be tough times. I'll be interesting to see if the AACS crews scab or not if Atlas strikes. I'd hate to be the Polar MEC right now too. With the intentional blurring of business by AAMT, they'll have some serious decisions to make also. No matter what happens, you can bet AAMT has their pockets and bank accounts stuffed.

They are also transferring some A/C to Polar. Sounds like management is up to pitting the crews against each other.. .. . . .Atlas Air Announces Flight Crew Furlough . . . .Purchase, NY - March 22,2002 -- In response to continuing softness in demand for heavy lift air services, Atlas Air, Inc. today announced the furlough of a portion of its crewmember workforce. The furlough, effective May 1, will initially consist of 40 employees. This action is a follow-up to last year’s crewmember furlough.. .. .“We are currently in the low point of the annual freight cycle, which has been further impacted by the global manufacturing recession. As a result, our crewmember workforce is presently overstaffed,” said Richard Shuyler, Chief Executive Officer of Atlas Air, Inc. “While we continue to see signs of an economic recovery, it is only prudent to more closely match our crew staffing levels to the current level of activity in the market.”. .. .The furlough could ultimately include up to 170 crewmembers, depending on market conditions. In order to provide sufficient time to retrain crewmembers who will be reassigned to a different equipment type, the furlough will be phased in over a period of thirteen months. My Atlas friends tell me that this is just the latest battle in what they describe as an unbelievably long and painful war that didn't have to happen.. .. .That Atlas management would pit the Polar pilots against the Atlas pilot was a forgone conclusion from the moment the acquisition of Polas was announced.. .. .The old Polar -100s were / are headed for scrap as soon as they run out of time. Pronouncements of ALPA solidarity notwithstanding, is it reasonable to expect Polar crews to refuse to fly the -200s / -300s being transferred by the parent corporation to their certificate and thus 'fall on their sword' and forfeit their jobs for their Atlas brethren?. .. .An unfortunate and sad place to work right now - all the more so as Atlas might have been a great place to be at one time.. .. .Ex-Lorenzo types indeed - has anyone heard from L.... since gave her heartfelt "...we'll make this a better place..." speech in Purchase on the occasion of the memorial service for M.... last year?
