Any update.....?

The CAA website gave BA World Cargo a 14 day extension, ie 1-15th April only.

So where is the N reg Classic now....? ?

What airframe is doing the work.....??

Are GSS ** REALLY ** looking for a G reg -400 replacment....??

Any other gossip....? ?

In answer to your questions;

The CAA do not make the decisions, the Department for Transport does. The CAA recommended a maximum extension of six months but the DfT does not have to accept this advice. I havn't had time to trawl through the websites to find out whether a decision has been made. perhaps you could give us the reference.

GSS depends on Atlas for it's aircraft supply. Atlas are unlikely to release a -400 for dry lease when they have the much more lucrative BA 'classic' wet lease.

The -200 has become a burden with oil at $72/barrel and there is no sign of oil getting lower anytime soon. This might put more pressure on Atlas to provide a -400, provided BA is worth it to them as a client.

Atlas themselves are planning to park their 8 classics from their Polar unit in the desert. Not surprising, this announcement just came yesterday -the day oil prices hit a new high- from Jeff Ericcson, CEO of Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings. He is also one of the Directors at GSS.

With oil at $72/barrel, possibly heading for $80 every airline will hurt, and if oil goes to $100, there just might be another shakeout among the Airlines.

Freighters might be less affected though, as Freight Companies can generally impose a fuel surcharge on the customer and recover the cost.

Bottom line is that -400 freighters are in huge demand right now and BA/GSS will be lucky if they get an extra one. We all hope for one, but I guess it depends on how important BA as a customer is to Atlas for them to fork out another -400.

Which states:

Without prejudice to the consideration of this application, the Department for Transport has decided to grant British Airways a temporary waiver from 1 April 2006 to 14 April 2006. This waiver has been granted in exceptional circumstances to meet the temporary needs of the airline until a decision on its application under the transparent procedures has been made

So who has the Classic freighter been operating for since the 14th April... surely it cant be BA as they dont have a current waiver...?

well it seems, that the -200 freighter N528MC is still operating for BA after 14.Apr.2006
Wonder if the CAA knows about this.

Many thanks for the link BKB. The waiver was not announced until four days after it came into effect. Could it be that they have extended the waiver but not yet announced it?

Well so much for raising objections etc - The aircraft in question is still operating a full line for BA till at least the 26 Apr. Despite a DTI Waiver till 14 Apl 06.

But an interesting point is why are GSS training/recruiting so many new FO;s maybe the management are preparing for a move on a Polar 400, this should not propose to much of a problem because GSS is 49% owned by Atlas.

Capt. Airclues has a point. There may be a further approval by the CAA which has not been published yet. It takes some time for information to flow.

I think that while the 14 day extension sends a clear message to BA -realistically- is too short to make a smooth transition, without getting financially hurt. And I don't think it is in anyone's interest that BA, Atlas or GSS get hurt in the process.

The Secretary of State for Transport has granted approval to the following UK operators to lease foreign registered aircraft:

Standard Transparent Procedure

British Airways Plc to wet lease one US registered Boeing 747-200F aircraft (registration N528MC or substitute) from 15 April 2006 until 20 September 2006 to provide additional capacity. After careful consideration the Secretary of State has decided that a waiver should be granted on the understanding that this is the final extension that will be granted in relation to this wet lease.

Details of the application were published in Official Record Series 2 No 1735 & No 1741.

This is good news for GSS. As Avius pointed out, a denial of the extension would have forced BA to look elsewhere. However the statement that this will be the last extension gives Atlas/GSS/BA nearly five months to source a 744F and train the crews.

I'm a little confused by your post. Could you please explain the relevance of a five year old article to the discussion of the BA/Atlas 'Classic' lease, and the possibility of a fourth aircraft for GSS?

sorry about the old news airclues but if you read the original thread where people were trying to find the connection between ba and gss i thought it was a good idea( ) to link to a site where the marriage all began
