Sorry to hear UK guys. After being "chopped" in Aus, I never actually felt bad leaving CX behind (despite not having a job to go to). So all is not lost.

Oasis 8th September 2021 08:00

Hi Will, do you know how many were on the base and how many went back to Hong Kong?

Dingleberry Handpump 8th September 2021 08:22

About 20% returned. The company obviously was happy to see the other 80% disappear.

I suspect similar figures will return from the U.K., and expect 0% returning from the US.

Oasis 8th September 2021 08:36

Thanks for that info, sad to see so many great people being forced leave the airline, after giving up their salary.

PercyP 9th September 2021 02:51

Sad to hear of another base closure. One assumes the affected pilots will be treated with the same compassion, empathy and recognition of long service that other based pilots have received?

controlledrest 9th September 2021 10:16

DFO and GMA didn't even have the guts to front this and make the announcement.

Will IB Fayed 10th September 2021 05:04

I heard 90 of 125 took redundancy. (In oz)

controlledrest 10th September 2021 05:26

PercyP

Are you joking? CX no longer has an compassion, empathy or recognition of long service....it is just another Asian LCC heading towards a hull loss. (I do hope you are joking, or simply no nothing about CX).

controlledrest

So wound up you can't even recognize sarcasm?

controlledrest 10th September 2021 23:08

I did think it was a piss take, but these days it is hard to tell.

There are some out there who think the company did the right thing by ignoring the contract and pushing everyone on to POS18, instead of following LIFO and cutting 1500 off the bottom.

DASH9 11th September 2021 21:10

Controlled rest.....Who thinks that ? Management ? Or are you referring to crew ?

DropKnee 11th September 2021 22:55

Those who believe they are safe. They will be coming for you next. The thirst for pilot tears is never satisfied.

Asturias56 12th September 2021 15:22

They really don't care if you cry or not - it's a relentless pressure to reduce costs and (hopefully for their stockholders) increase returns - that's capitalism.

Many industries have seen the same thing over the years - it just seems to happen faster now

controlledrest 14th September 2021 00:13

Dash9

I suspect all who joined on POS18 are pleased that the contract was abandoned and LIFO wasn't used. DFO and GMA are probably also pleased as forcing us all onto POS18 will help secure their bonuses.

Good on ya

fatbus 18th September 2021 16:15

Hope it works out for them . Not tied up in courts for years and just profit to the lawyers .

Jnr380 19th September 2021 14:07

CX lawyers wrong again! Could it be that CX hired the cheapest lawyers around for the EA expecting them to perform their duty more meticulous then higher payed lawyers? I wonder which other group within CX that the directors expect the same from?

Redundant1 2nd October 2021 11:21

Those who have returned to HKG from bases, did you get current again quickly or were you left sitting around in HKG for months? Are you now flying?

Thanks.

controlledrest 3rd October 2021 01:45

A caring company would have left bases open until there was sufficient work in HKG for applicants to get visas. A well managed company would have moved pilots onto POS18, withheld HKG living allowance and left them on the base until they could be trained and used on the line.

CX has closed the bases and destroyed lives. The few with PR have moved back to HKG and are now doing no training and no work, but are separated from their families and incurring the added expense of living in HKG.

PercyP 3rd October 2021 06:17

Makes you wonder why there was such a sudden rush to close bases, hmmm?

8driver 3rd October 2021 21:30

Why would CoS18 on a base have no allowance? The company made it very clear that the allowance is not a housing allowance. I have living expenses on a base as well. My mortgage isn't going to go away with a massive pay downgrade, why would my monthly pay be 3,900 USD less than a a HKG based captain?

Flex88 3rd October 2021 22:16

Why ?

Why? Because you accepted it, that's why.

8driver 3rd October 2021 23:36

I've accepted nothing. I was responding to controlled rest who suggested bases be left open on CoS18 without a monthly allowance. I was questioning the logic behind the lack of allowance. There is only one base left open and if CoS18 is presented without the monthly allowance its a non-starter. I'll just take the negotiated severance and go.

bellcrank88 4th October 2021 01:23

I think most of the pilots have already moved on, have no intentions of returning to stalag HK, and are quite happy to have the salary deposited into the bank every month thanks.

AnAmusedReader 4th October 2021 06:55

8Driver, what's the negotiated severance?

8driver 4th October 2021 20:28

They need to announce the base closure first and then we will see what is negotiated. I would think we'd get pretty much the same as what the other base areas have received, although I'd certainly push for more knowing that the visa question has been settled.

controlledrest 4th October 2021 21:14

8driver

It is my understanding that Aussie offered to stay on zero pay, the Canadians offered to go onto zero pay and the Kiwis offered POS18, no HKG living allowance whilst still in NZ, until the company needed the manpower, all to try to keep the bases open. Instead the company has decided to force those who can (and wanted to) to return to HKG ASAP to do nothing (and increase the costs to the individuals and the company) and to pay out all the highly experienced pilots who couldn't get a visa.

The USA base will close, visas and POS18 won't be offered. At least there are jobs going in the States, so the obvious thing to do is take the money and run.

8driver 5th October 2021 00:35

Controlledrest,

Absolutely take the money and run and I fully expect the base to close. The sooner the announcement is made the better so we can get on with our lives. Those that offered to accept PoS18 with no allowance did nobody any favors, especially those of us in the USA if for some reason the company does want to negotiate a new CBA. But they did negotiate severance packages that are better than three months pay, so I thank them for that.

Air Profit 6th October 2021 05:18

mngmt mole

they have certainly destroyed more pilot careers than just about any others airline in history
