Cathay Pay Rise

Just In:

"I am pleased to advise that the Company and the HKAOA have agreed to interim increases to salaries for Unified First Officers, Freighter First Officers and Freighter Captains, effective from 1st July 2008. The increases will apply system-wide to FO 1 to 3 on the Unified FO scale, as well as FO 1 to 8 and Captain 1 to 5 on the Freighter scale.

Approximate Increase Effective 1 July 2008 (as % of Salary and HDP)

Year / Unified FO / Freighter FO / Freighter Capt
1 / 6% / 6% / 4%
2 / 6% / 6% / 4%
3 / 6% / 6% / 4%
4 / 0% / 6% / 4%
5 / 0% / 4% / 4%
6 / 0% / 3% / 0%
7 / 0% / 2% / 0%
8 / 0% / 1% / 0%
9 / 0% / 0% / 0%
10+ / 0% / 0% / 0%

These increases were agreed to ensure that we remain competitive in the recruitment market and to bring Cathay's European remuneration on par with FCS. Further discussions will be held with the HKAOA over the next few months to decide final remuneration for all categories of crew to be implemented in 2009"

Cathay Hong Kong Pilots Lowest Paid?

Can someone please check my numbers cause this doesn't seem right!

I took first year passenger fleet Captain pay for comparison and current exchange rates as of today.

1st year passenger fleet Captain monthly salary

Hong Kong Based HKD 101,326

Europe Based GBP 8,158 = HKD 126,755

Australian Based AUD 16,786 = HKD 121,755

US Based USD 15,130 = HKD 117,777

Canadian Based CAD 15,665 = HKD 123,351

New Zealand Based NZD 20,860 = HKD 130,281

So are we being paid less being based in Hong Kong or have I miscalculated because this doesn't seem right? I thought being based in Hong Kong was supposed to attract a premium?

hongkongpilot 4th March 2008 15:06

Fuzzy Math, it seems that housing is part of salary now.;)

viking avenger 4th March 2008 17:46

the other COL not QOL

will the tax you pay to IRD for that housing be an equal amount of $$$$ to what you pay for similar cement box in your home country? morgate / rates he lot?

Are those trips to to Parking shop, filling the carts as high for the same dollars as back home>

Can your bus pas go as fast as your car? All these considerations are for those pilots living in HKG should look at. DPA pilots did, and now they are leaving!

Before Tax - Monthly

Hong Kong Based HKD 101,326

Europe Based GBP 8,158 = HKD 126,755

Australian Based AUD 16,786 = HKD 121,755

US Based USD 15,130 = HKD 117,777

Canadian Based CAD 15,665 = HKD 123,351

New Zealand Based NZD 20,860 = HKD 130,281
Using the simple tax calculators I could find online for a single person, and not claiming any deductions, I came up with the following after tax pay converted to Hong Kong dollars. This is just a simple comparison, your intimate tax knowlege will probably give a different result...!!

After Tax - Monthly
Hong Kong Based HKD 86392

Europe Based GBP

Australian Based AUD 10870 = HKD 78316

US Based USD 11445 = HKD 89095

Canadian Based CAD 10337 = HKD 80908

New Zealand Based NZD 13452 = HKD 83622

Whilst spending millions on advertising they continually fail to note that the best advertising is word of mouth.

One significant payrise - for all - would get the attention of any/all pilots in the marketplace.

Sadly, thats not the Cathay way.
Excellent point

All on A-Scale !

It's time..
Please, put on some pressure..

All on A-scale July 1st.
Negociated retirement 65.

Don't answer your phone unless you're on reserve or take crew direct roster changes.

Guten post beim Silberfuchs!!

Agree 100%.
Heard from Emirates C&T that they are expecting another BIG (in the region of 30%) payrise...to be announced in April..

But sadly it's not all just about the money in Hongkers,as Hong Kong has slipped from no.2 position to no.15 when it came to the choices of expat cities (yes..Singapore came 1st AGAIN..with Sydney in the no.2 position - despite the mean customs officials!!)....

Major concerns such as AIR POLLUTION http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?t=316339

expensive accomodation, schooling, bad service, red tape, medical, lack of anti-discrimination and employee protection laws etc are off course all contributing factors!!

This city has - sadly - become JUST ANOTHER stinky,UNfriendly and polluted chinese sh@&thole:yuk:

Mate I'm in the pit and that's the first I've heard about it, would be nice, much needed, but at the remote end of the probability scale... try 3%

Grivation 5th March 2008 03:59

Still less money than a narrow body FO in Oz - and on top of that 10-15 years to a (Hong Kong based) command.

No wonder people don't turn up for interviews.

Flying Mechanic 5th March 2008 05:01

what about f/o salaries?

MAX 8th March 2008 04:38

S/O's get nothing?

MAX:cool:

This pay rise is about one thing - trying to attract the KA freighter pilots to take up CX's wonderful 'offer'. Since KA had it's pay agreement in December, the KA drivers have been on more than their counterparts in CX.

Unfortunately, the mismanagers pushing this 'offer' (or is it a transfer :hmm:) have failed to realise that our concern is not money, but the complete disregard of our seniority policy and dare I say it, UK law.

BTW, I'm not suggesting for one minute that CX freighter crews don't deserve the pay increase. Enjoy it and it might be nice if you spend some of it buying the Dragonair boys a beer when you next see them in the gay bar! :ok:

F.QII 12th March 2008 07:37

So what is the current year 1 freighter DEFO money at the moment,is it the same as last years or somewhere in between the new scale they implemented in Jan 08 and last years.................

Ex Douglas Driver 12th March 2008 13:32

FO Year One Freighter Pay - 01 Jul 08

Base / Annual / Month / Currency
European / ₤47,556 / ₤3,963 / GBP
US / $69,732 / $5,811 / USD
Australian/ $98,148 / $8,179 / AUD
Canadian / $85,944 / $7,162 / CAD
Asian / $634,560 / $52,880/ HKD

TruBlu351 12th March 2008 17:54

It just made the 25% pax pay cut last year down to only 20%! :D

Considering Q is decent pay (with none of the "up north" issues) & they want 1500 pilots in the next 5 years.........the throw away line "to remain competitive" in the recruiting market is a joke.

Interesting times.

Fenwicksgirl 14th March 2008 02:05

AUD-HKD now 7.3
Therefore,
1st Yr CX Capt 166,000 AUD per year
1st Yr CX F.O 108,800 AUD per year (not JFO)
1st Yr CX S.O 54,540 AUD per year

Obviously housing is the big x-factor here, but does that make that much of a difference to the bottom line, considering everything else????

I am not as smart as NC but that is the basics. Considering the uproar in Oz that VOz want to pay cruise F.Os (S.Os by any other name) b/w $45,000 and $60,000, why would they then even think about CX and Hong Kong???? Also, their command package of approx $220,000 all incl is looking much better now hey!!

Aussie 14th March 2008 13:56

Guess it shows, CX must still be gettin the applicants and filling seats then...
