Is the CCTV they are capturing really from these IFE units? Or is it the case that they have general CCTV on the aircraft (like any other mode of public transport), and the IFE equipment units happen to have cameras integrated, but aren't used at present.

Can an aircraft feasibly store video feeds from 300+ cameras simultaneously anyway and store enough data for a long haul sector?

It's not the 'facts' that matter, it's the optics that count. A lesson this arrogant, tone deaf and unaccountable management never seem to learn. With the coming data breach fines (expect hundreds of usd millions), lowering revenues due to the mess created in HK by a CX-like arrogant and tone deaf government, this latest bad publicity, a collapsing stock price etc, etc...you can expect another decade of no pay rise, no 13th month, no profit share (haha) and basically no career. Sure, go ahead and stay, come on in, the waters lovely....

SIA was in the press earlier this year about the same thing. The only difference was they said they weren't in use.

But how many public data breaches has SIA had?

If I was going to implement facial analytics using the IFE I'd definitely do it during meal service. RFID or wifi on the trolley to be able to correlate it's position. Take a photo snapshot once every 30/60s and then run through it later to see how people react to getting or not getting what they wanted. Bonus points: track the crew at the same time and make the happiness quotient part of their KPIs. and then maybe ask their union if they are cool? Cool.

No point doing it during movies unless you want people to be able to skip to the good bits, like one of YouTube's competitors!

From the CNBC article it seems like CX don't have recording capability anyway within the IFE so (if this is correct) the IFE video recording issue is a moot point. Potential concern with the other IFE analytics captured, but only if this isn't anonymised.

As for the CCTV; given the numerous accounts on pprune about harrasment / assault etc on CC, surely this is positive thing?

The data governance is a very valid question, but why give particular attention to airlines? This is surely a much broader issue that should also be asked of other public transport operators, airports, shopping centres, car parks etc... I'm sure all have similar issues with data security and use.

Singling out an airline smells like scaremongering to me

It is interesting to ponder why the Cathay Pacific spokesman felt it necessary to add "There are no CCTV cameras installed in the toilets".

Simply mind blowing...

I really like this bit from CX privacy statement.........

As usual, everyone here misses the main point: it is not the 'fact" of the matter (ie: are they actually recording), it's the 'optics' of the situation (ie: most of the world thinks CX is spying inflight on their pax). You don't end up on the front page of CNBC and not have some effect in the attitude towards the airline in the greater US pax sentiment.

From the CNBC article it reads
"Cathay Pacific, for its part, said it has never installed such devices in its IFEs.
“Our inflight entertainment systems do not have any cameras, microphones or sensors to monitor passengers, nor have they in the past,” it said in the statement."
And I am pretty sure we only have those camera outside the flight deck and they probably do not retain footages. This whole news was about our policy update, speaking of a provision in a policy. But some how they work out that cx have admitted that they are spying on people. Must be a slow news day.
