So, about that -8i order…..

FAA to warn airlines of engine icing risk on Boeing 747-8s, Dreamliners - Yahoo Finance

Hmm, avoid flying over thunderstorms. Probably a good idea regardless of airplane huh?

The AD will require operators to circumnavigate yellow to red intensity TS cells. No big deal as the ride over these types of cells is often uncomfortable anyway.

So another 20T extra! But hey, let's "RETI" as per the notams, that will save a whopping 100 kgs :ok:

VR-HFX 26th Nov 2013 08:19

Indeed. If we have to be reminded to stay away from those naughty storms then time to take Mrs HFX's NOTAM to heart...RETI RE:ok:

Billy do you currently avoid all amber and red radar returns by 50nms?

cyrex 26th Nov 2013 17:43

hmmm middle of pacific, large storm system, to avoid by 50nm might be a total of 100-150 nm offset or more...... used up the mandatory fuel... land in PHNL.... win?:8:rolleyes:

Yes, they scare me to the point of soiling myself.

I was merely pointing out that I don't think it's a big enough reason for people to cancel or not order 8i's.

1200firm 27th Nov 2013 14:58

...so maybe we should ground the -8F's then?

swh 28th Nov 2013 14:34

"Flight is prohibited within 50NM of amber or red radar returns that are displayed below the airplane's flight path"

Terrain ?

buggaluggs 28th Nov 2013 22:21

The Collins Multiscan radar references the terrain database to remove terrain returns from the display ( for the most part ) in auto mode. So unless there's what it considers relevant weather ahead you see a blank screen.
You will paint terrain returns in manual mode though, so Wx deviation is still going to need some SA and common sense. I get the impression that, as you would expect, a lot of this procedure is to cover Boeing and GE's 6 as much as to keep the crew out of trouble! If/when there is another 'drama' it'll be the crews fault, as usual! :ugh:

fly123456 29th Nov 2013 04:11

:D buggaluggs.
That's exactly what it is.

So next summer, to cover OUR asses, we will have to upload another 10T of fuel.
