Why did they not go for the -8i then, it is such a wonderful aircraft in your view, United are now replacing the 747 with the 350-1000??????

Look up the last time UA or CA ordered something larger than a 772, and you'll be able to answer your own question...

I'm pretty sure the NAM appetite for VLA sized risk is zero, but you never know... That big A380 order for a US airline might be right around the corner.

Boeing is stealing the low-capacity widebody from Airbus with the 787, whereas Airbus is now biting a big chunk out of the 777 hunting grounds with the A350.

Rewind 10 years, with the A330 and the 777, and things were exactly the opposite. It's a cyclical thing. Neither A nor B can have a top of the line product offering for each segment at any given time.
I'm not crying for any of them. Their salesmen will get a bigger bonus than ours again...

If the 787 sales continue they may even make some money out of it. Timing of the 787-10 is very close to the 77x. Wonder how many are going to hang off for the new 777, as it sounds like a game changer for those that can wait for it?

The 777-8X will likely be a flop, in my opinion. It's too close in capacity to the 350-1000 or even 787-10 for an older design. And hardly anyone needs that much range.

Now, the 777-9X... That will be the true twin replacement for the 744, just like the 77W is for the 747 classic. And Airbus has nothing to offer against it, unless they double stretch the A350.

That was posted before in the thread, dated from 2011. The current 8900.1 fig 5-88 (http://registry.faa.gov/TypeRatings/) dated 2013 still does not reflect a common type rating.

Pilots from United have two type ratings.

The 777-8 will only be attractive to a few certain airlines who want the range. A look at the current 777-200LR users will give you a clue of who a potential customer may be (Middle Eastern trio (Yes Etihad are getting them shortly), LAN, maybe someone in Australia or NZ). But more importantly, the 777-8 will form the platform for the 777-8F and it is here Boeing will be hoping to shift a few frames. So it will not be a huge seller but I highly doubt it can be called a flop.
