Upgrades for the year - 1/2 many JFOs, 2x SOs

Word on the street (or at least some STCs fresh from a training meeting) is the the latest training plan for this year has 70 Captains, 60 JFOs (down from 110-120), and 240 SOs (up from 120)!

Speculation is because of the new FTLs - 2 SO to North America and Europe. SO upgrades easily over 5 years... P1X ratings coming out.

Forget about bases in Europe and NAM for FOs. If this is true, there are now 50% too many FOs on bases.

Anyone hear anything about this?

jonathon68 19th Feb 2011 11:42

Cn 76, Jfo 60, So 249

Nullaman 19th Feb 2011 12:04

Given the new routes/extra flights to certain destinations + command retirees/resignees this year I think the Cn figure a little on the low side.

airplaneridesrfun 19th Feb 2011 13:20

Strict compliance of our contract will increase the number of upgrades needed; perhaps by as much as 50%. I doubt the AOA or CX will want to compromise the stated goals of the CX safety policy by decreasing the experience level in the cockpit. Transferring aircraft to AHK is obviously another driver of this 'rumor', and is actively in the process of being quelled.

If CX is in fact investing significantly in new aircraft, then why is any hope of upgrade at CX drying up?

Mouwaa 19th Feb 2011 13:27

airplaneridesrfun, is that English you are typing? It makes no sense to read.

MilPilot 19th Feb 2011 14:21

Doesn't look like they had any problems finding enough qualified cadets (SOs) after all :E

HEALY 20th Feb 2011 01:21

One would hope the revival then to push for 5th year pay scale for all of us unlucky enough to be given this possible blow. If not then I say CC should be implemented including not making the bunks and refusing the sambos.

Fly747 20th Feb 2011 02:59

2012 coming.

Don't forget Nullaman that CX only promised to keep the KA brand until 2012. If the two 330 fleets are amalgamated then not so many CNs needed!

HEALY 20th Feb 2011 04:27

True Dan, the sambos do provide a main meal for most SO's however the fact still remains that another scale needs to be implemented, plus the jury is still out on the Bypass pay stuff for officers on COS 08. As far as it reads the general idea amongst many is that it should be paid.

Rook 20th Feb 2011 05:21

The thing you need to ask yourself is: Can you really sit for 5+ years as an SO and not go insane? I think I already know my answer.

Captain Dart 20th Feb 2011 05:29

Sooo :hmm:... where are all these 'S/O' 's going to come from? Will CX be ringing round all those who rejected the 'cadet' offer, cap in hand, offering housing? Who is going to resign from a job and take the risk that CX will move the goalposts again before they start? Who is going to train them all?

Cpt. Underpants 20th Feb 2011 06:34

RUMOUR has it that Cathay is considering sweetening the tea by offering a "joining bonus" of between HKD250K (long course) to HKD1M (short course) to "iCadets".

Must be a result of the overwhelming response.

Sir KDM Lowe 20th Feb 2011 08:18

RUMOUR has it that Cathay is considering sweetening the tea by offering a "joining bonus".......
.....or just stick with the original SO package and stop trying to degrade the profession any further. And to think there are senior pilot managers in this company, most of whom have enjoyed financially lucrative careers, pushing for these inferior contracts. It's very sad.

MrClaus 20th Feb 2011 22:48

Another kick in the guts for the poor old SOs. You'd think management has something against them.

On the other hand...They are woefully short of their current recruitment target of 200 SOs for the year, so to achieve 250 will be unachievable without a big change to the 'package' they are currently being offered.

Capt Toss Parker 21st Feb 2011 03:44

Unless you're ex military and an ace Caribou pilot you won't be upgrading on the 777 .... I'll make sure of that.

S/O's can learn a lot from making the bunks ... Courtesy Respect & Manners ... simple attributes that make an excellent aviator.

Must dash I have some inter dates that I need to stalk.

Flaps10 24th Feb 2011 06:45

Supposedly confirmed by source in AOA and we should know more shortly...
:mad::mad::mad::mad::ugh::ugh::ugh::ugh::hmm:

airplaneridesrfun 24th Feb 2011 07:35

Sounds to me like negotiating leverage for RP's with the union. SK and IR at it again; watch out!

cxlinedriver 24th Feb 2011 21:16

Wonder how many upgrades if we still worked to 55?

But I guess we should be pleased that those of us on A Scales can take a pay cut at 55 and carry on. And those of us without commands can just take a delay in promotion without compensation. Same fruit (pineapple), just slightly different sizes.

sorvad 24th Feb 2011 21:49

cx line driver....is that delay in promotion without any compensation disregarding the extra 10 years you'll get earning the best part of $HK1.5 million per year, or did you forget to factor that in to the great scheme of things

Captain Dart 25th Feb 2011 00:07

...or joining the company on a reduced pay scale in the first place.

Capt Toss Parker 25th Feb 2011 05:17

Bull Crap .....

They hired me when I told them I was a 707 pilot .... but in actual fact I was never a 707 pilot just a sim instructor

I started to get embarrassed telling chicks I was a Caribou pilot because none of them new what a Caribou was .... So I had to switch it up and just tell them I was a 707 driver instead ...

Edited for Shot Nancy ...

Shot Nancy 25th Feb 2011 11:09

Thank you Toss.

Fly747 25th Feb 2011 12:47

Where?

Uh Nancy I get Neptune 2 but where is The Oaks?

cxlinedriver 26th Feb 2011 04:28

Working past 55 because there is a delay in promotion is not compensation. It is working for longer than one might have otherwise been able to achieve.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your mistress, 3rd wife, warbirds, sports cars and holiday homes and yachts. I don't mind having my promotion slowed up so you can continue to enjoy the high life.

Captain Dart 26th Feb 2011 05:31

In that case why did you complain?

Air Profit 26th Feb 2011 09:07

CX Line Driver: ...yea, and i'm sure you would end your career prematurely to benefit your 'juniors'..? To**er!

Capt Toss Parker 26th Feb 2011 09:28

In actual fact I drive a Porsche ... have a warbird and guess what I'm also divorced!

COS 08 all the way! Give back to aviation we cant afford to lose the experience on the fleet ... if us old codgers left the airline would collapse and then you'd all be out of a job.

cxlinedriver 27th Feb 2011 23:03

You are the tosser Air Profit

I would retire tomorrow if I could and I had planned on retiring at 55. I don't want to be working nights any longer than I have to.

No one is asking you to cut your career short but you could at least be honest enough to acknowledge that working beyond 55 slows up the careers of those below you.

Humber10 27th Feb 2011 23:58

some here are trying to justify working longer and cant understand that it was the RA55 contract that allowed them quick commands and now they dont want to afford crew junior the same opportunity.

some people must be deluded to think that junior crew actually want to extend :ugh: This is however old news. Prior to RA65, Some A scalers were saying it was those who accepted B scale that eroded the COS, now they have accepted C scale and have eroded it even further, thats ok. so whose to blame :} ,well we all know that answer, but it highlights the culture of individuals just doing what is best for themselves and not what is best for everyone.

whats done is done, so we move on, but it rubs salt in the wound when some deny that it affects junior crew and think that those junior want to and will extend.

raven11 1st Mar 2011 02:33

Humber10

You delude yourself into believeing that those pilots, "senior" to you, that have extended (morons you called them) need to justify themselves to you?

You're not the only victim here....we are all victims of the market forces and management culture that have strangled aviation for the past 20 years.

Direct your frustration towards those that have created this can of worms.

sorvad 2nd Mar 2011 06:25

Humber 10

you might want to look at what's happening to retirement age across the world...do you think those selfless BA and Virgin types are standing down 5 or 10 years earlier in order to let those precious F/O's below them take early commands?...yeah right..and why the hell should they?...in order for those F/O's to be able to work 5 or 10 years more than them with all the financial rewards that would bring? Times change as do contracts ...all the time, in every industry the world over, and we all sometimes benefit from it and sometimes don't.

As for me, my command has been delayed so far probably by about 2 years, but in the long term I will be able to be a captain for up to 10 years longer...if I choose to do so, and yes, its if I choose to as it is with all those staying on now, and thats how it should be.

JayTee777300 9th Mar 2011 09:42

2 SO's on the flight deck = 2 trays of sandwiches!

Can CX afford that or are we gonna get screwed on that too?

Gravox 11th Mar 2011 02:33

More sandwiches!!!!
Excellent, i won't want to upgrade then. An upgrade is only going to ruin my lifestyle anyway.

Sike 11th Mar 2011 05:02

So where are years 5, 6, 7, and 8 on the S.O. salary increments?

Rook 11th Mar 2011 06:38

has this been confirmed yet?
