Question Where did the name CX come from?

A friend recently asked me how did the name "Cathay Pacific" come about. Would someone elaborate on this?

Thank you

Legend has it that the name arose from a meeting between Farrell and de Kantzow (founders of CX) and journalists from Time and Newsweek (possibly others) at the Tropicana Bar of the Manila Hotel.

"Beyond Lion Rock", well worth reading, has more details.

The musings at the Tropicana Bar led to the name Air Cathay. Prompt name change as it was the name of an airline in a comic strip "Terry & the Pirates". After much brainstorming (& drinking) decided on "Cathay Pacific Airways". Pacific was added because it was believed that one day the airline would fly the ocean. Corporate papers signed 23 September 1949.
- Now read the book.
