I think you'll find the problem that Hong Kong's masters have with Cathay, from a 'Xinofobic' point of view, is that unlike every other airline in China there are currently NO ex CCP Airforce pilots calling the shots here. That situation will have to be rectified before Cathay is off the hook. ;-)
