Just for interest I opened the HKA website and looked at
booking a flight to SVB on 23rd April return. It seems
to be working fine with no mention of what United says.

How do you know, United? I’m assuming you’ve got reliable evidence. Also, does this typically precede failure or is this just something that happens from time to time when things get tricky? What would it mean for CX if HKA fails, I’m guessing better yields for a start?

The scumbags running that outfit have tired of attacking the staff and are now attacking each other. The final demise is at hand, and good riddance to them.
I feel sorry for some of the guys who work there - but there are just as many who deserve little or no sympathy. The hangers on, and management ar5e lickers. They nailed their colours to the mast of a sinking ship, and they'll go down with it.
Only 25% union membership?
They deserve what's coming to them.

So what is the story behind these headlines?

TOKYO
This month, there have been 11 reported cases of missing screws and light covers, which are believed to have fallen off Hong Kong Airlines aircraft that have landed at Narita Airport. According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (MLIT), six of the cases were reported between May 26 and May 28, and another case on Wednesday, Fuji TV reported. The other incidents happened earlier this month.
It is highly unusual for aircraft components to go missing from the same commercial airline in such a short time span and Hong Kong Airlines said it is currently investigating the cause. The aircraft components were found to be missing during an inspection conducted after the planes arrived at Narita.

As long as the wheels aren't falling off...
From what I hear, Japanese Airlines tend to run on a very minimal defect list as opposed to most Hong kong domiciled Airlines who run to maximum time limits.
Probably why the Local 2727 was so shocked to find a few screws were missing

And CX have refused to pay the first payment of HKD1. 2 billion (for the acquisition of HKE) as HKA have not yet disposed of the 747-400F acquired under "dubious circumstances".
Interesting times ahead.

Looks like things are getting sorted. Debts being paid and restructuring underway.
Anyone trying to get on a flight out of Hong Kong recently will know, there is no shortage of passengers..

It's true that the low loads are affecting all airlines in HKG and HX is certainly no exception. They did actually cancel some flights and downgrade from 359 to 330 or 320. Till today, nothing is officially announced by management. Nobody knows really what'a going to happen. Looks like the loads are starting to come back but this could be easily affected by a next event and especially another day blocking the airport.

I'm not a pilot but connected to sources in HX and believe it was a dual hydraulic failure, heavy landing and burst tires on landing. Pax evacuated onto tarmac. Love the SCMP quote of a "technical glitch" . Airframe is the piece of junk ex Emirates almost 19 years old. Surprised it gets down the runway without bits falling off.

Just an observation that the average age of Cathay Dragon's fleet is approximately 16 years, with quite a lot of planes that are more than 20 years old (some more than 25)!
