This is as good a display as you're going to get that in this company, saving face is more important than making money. "We're happy to take a hedging loss because it means fuel's cheap." Great logic Ivan.
They will never admit they screwed up monumentally, and therefore we are guaranteed to repeat the same mistakes. So standby for more wins from hedging losses.

The claim that "we're improving our product" has to be the statement of a complete imbecile. The product has been deteriorating for years (punctuality, catering, service), the only improvement are to the number of destinations and the frequency, although these are unreliable due to cancellations due crew shortages.
There is a certain childish (Chinglish) logic whereby Confucius says "It is good to make huge losses on fuel hedging because that means fuel is cheap"!!!
In his previous life our Ivan (not his real name which is Wankee) was a very successful Mong Kok taxi driver.

Its hard to understand why Swire's have chosen him to be the face of Cathay, he's not an inspirational person at all. How can an $8 Billion Fuel hedging loss be good for business.
Cx needs a real leader......time to move on Ivan ,Choo Choo!

That there is a perfect example of why we are where we are.
That is an embarrassment.
If you are going to conduct an interview in English get one of the other muppets who can speak the language to front the English speaking media.
That honglish yib yab combined with a very poor attempt to explain away an incredibly inept hedging strategy is embarrassing for him and all of us.

Great,
Ivan does an interview in English on Bloomberg and the share price drops 2.3%. At some stage the Directors must take action. He is more chuffed at squeezing 3% productivity out of everyone than correcting an 8 Billion HKD hedging loss.
Everything is awesome!!

Interesting, Goathead.
I probably hate the procedure as much as you do; I think it was very poorly designed and implemented. I doubt that it saves any money at all; in fact, I believe that it actually will cost money in the long run from unintended consequences (such as NWS problems, ie, unkown unkowns, etc). I particularly think the designer of this procedure gave it as much though as I did to what I flushed down the toilet this evening.
Having said that, it is now as much a part of the SOPs as anything else. It makes no difference to me whether or not I do it, except when I am in overtime: then I like it a lot!
