Crew Control Recording our phone calls
Just looked into the Privacy Ordinance of HK.
My understanding is that they have to justify why they are recording the phone call, and that you can challenge them and correct them on the nature of the phone call.
i.e. Make a recording for yourself and then challenge them.
Six Data Protection Principles (DPP) of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance
DPP1: personal data shall be collected for a purpose directly related to a function and activity of the data user; lawful and fair collection of adequate data; data subjects shall be informed of the purpose for which the data are collected and to be used.
DPP2: all practicable steps shall be taken to ensure the accuracy of personal data; data shall be deleted upon fulfillment of the purpose for which the data are used.
DPP3: unless the data subject has given prior consent, personal data shall be used for the purpose for which they were originally collected or a directly related purpose.
DPP4: all practicable steps shall be taken to ensure that personal data are protected against unauthorized or accidental access, processing or erasure.
DPP5: formulates and provides policies and practices in relation to personal data.
DPP6: individuals have rights of access to and correction of their personal data. Data users should comply with data access or data correction request within the time limit, unless reasons for rejection prescribed in the Ordinance are applicable.

From my information at the time, the company rode a coach and horses through the predecessor to the Privacy Ordinance around the time of the 49's which was essentially the OECD guidelines. Hotel room key logs was one useful piece of data which could be used to find out if a crew member was in his room ignoring the phone or out on the town.
Legal must have had a look at what goes on in CC and reckon they can spin out a case for years if they are challenged.
It is not if a company breaks the law. It is if they care if they break the law. Sometimes the penalty is worth the industrial advantage.

Does anyone know if the room entry records are on the card or elsewhere in the system? Likely it's hotel dependant... Either way, perhaps it's time to implement a policy at checkout of declaring: "frightfully sorry ol' chap... I appear to have misplaced the room key card..."

Phone in the room did not ring...
I unplugged the phone in the room to get rest...
I must have been in the shower when the phone rang...
The flashing light on the phone must have been burned out...

Slightly off track but one well known Middle East airline would sometimes check the room service bills for times when ordered/delivered to see if the crew were abiding by the Indian DCA 12 hour rules! Stretched the ingenuity of pilots, for getting a drink, for all of ten minutes!

The message needs to be spread to our younger bretheren who may not understand that they don't need to actually pick up that piece of paper under the door, or answer the phone.

Interesting one the other day. After blocks in HKG, the SO calls 8929 while still on the airplane. No messages. The other 3 of us rock up to check in at the Headland 30 minutes later, and one of the guys has a note to call CC on his check in paperwork. Complete with allowance change.

Maybe get in touch with the guy and see if he wants to give the AoA a heads up.
