Blah, blah, blah, nervous about "stick and rudder" flying, blah, blah, blah, nervous about flying an approach where you have to "look out the windshield" blah blah blah.

"Pilots spend more time managing computer systems than manually flying planes, systems that are more precise and use less fuel than a human pilot."

So pilot's are the problem. Let's get rid of them, they really stink. Is this what I hear them saying?

[QUOTE]Whatever happened to Airmanship?/QUOTE]

….. ah yes, airmanship, I'm afraid it was priced out of the market …..

You get what you pay for, here is the end product and CX is stumbling headlong to a similar standard!!

That commodity has become too expensive, I'm afraid.
Just like fuel, airlines need to carry as little as possible in their airplanes these days.

This allows for frozen or decreasing pilot salary scales and thus higher bonus yields.

What's tho odd burning wreck after all...? Everybody has ADD these days, Brangelina adopts a new baby, and everyone forgets what that was all about.

This is the future of CX, no matter how keen the new cadets are we need experience into the RHS. Good luck.

I think the point was that the FUK f*ck-ups was done by a very experienced captain whereas a cargo fire (BKK-CMB?) was handled very well by a brand new captain.

You could not find two events that bear less relevance to each other.

If you tried a little harder, you will find many events where the seasoned captain did very well and the newbie pooched it - badly.

Give it a rest.

To argue that experience is not relevant is beyond ridiculous.

Of course, the complements to experience are recency and competence. I personally wish all our cadet entry pilots would do no more than two years as SOs before heading to KA to fly lots of sectors on the 320 before becoming widebody FOs.

If only that were possible, or perhaps employ DEFOs again.

I have to agree with you 100%.

I am a bit stunned that you have not been defending the much vaunted Boeing Autothrust (or whatever they call it) system! Come on, mate you are letting the side down.

To paraphrase one of my favourite flicks...

"Apes don't read philosophy.
Yes, they do Otto, they just don't understand it."

If a machine has a potential to hurt someone, an idiot will ensure it does.

The only aircraft that you can't kill yourself in, is a Piper Cub.

How did the news of the Asiana incident bring up a discussion about cadets?

Though I agree that experience is essential in an airline, what makes you think the pilots involved were former cadets? Also, by the time you are a captain with thousands of hours, does it really matter where you learned to fly?
