Cathay pilot union decides against industrial action | South China Morning Post

Cathay Pacific passengers can breathe a sigh of relief after the airline's pilot union decided against launching a work-to-rule action over the Christmas period in response to a pay dispute.

Pilots who asked not to be named told the Post they were angry that the airline was awarding its cabin crew a 4.5 per cent pay rise next year but not offering any increase to pilots.

They said they were disappointed that the Hong Kong Aircrew Officers Association, which represents 1,900 pilots, had not chosen to launch a work-to-rule action to pressure the airline.

A work-to-rule is a form of industrial action whereby employees do no more than the minimum required by the rules of their contracts.

In a letter to its 1,900 members last week, the association's general secretary Dennis Dolan wrote that Cathay was insisting the association not declare "contract compliance", a type of work-to-rule in which pilots would refuse to work if they were called in on rostered days off.

"The company wishes us to suspend the current [contract compliance] motion and continue with comprehensive 'good faith' negotiations, with meetings taking place today and during a week-long session beginning January 6," he wrote.

The association had earlier been authorised by its members to declare contract compliance if it received an "inadequate response" from the airline about a pay demand for an undisclosed amount. The association had set the deadline for November 28.

Despite the decision not to launch the action, the airline has made no promise of a pay rise. It has said any increases agreed in coming talks would be backdated by four months, but no further back than January 1 next year. The association's general committee voted to accept the offer.

"Judging from responses on [union] message boards, there is a lot of anger and I still would not rule out any type of work-to-rule action," one pilot said.

A Cathay spokesman said: "Communication with the pilots in Hong Kong remains ongoing. We have agreed to commence discussions on salary arrangements and other matters of mutual interest early next year. Meanwhile, we continue to operate our flight services as usual."

SEE.. The company used the event to reassure the pax.
The Comm cannot be allowed to negotiate further.
Reckon an article saying the pilots are revolting and refusing to negotiate with the company AND planning delays /contract compliance would get a offer from the company sooner.

Nothing to stop everyone from doing CC anyway. It's not rocket surgery. Of course, there will always be the excuses from the G-day heroes and compulsive crew notification checkers saying 'but it's my right!' So when the next heroes asks the AOA where their pay rise is, I hope the GC tells them "it's been used to fund your paltry 2.5% G-day callout and to pay the 'productivity bonus' to the ICM scheduler who saved EFP by using you to shaft the Reserve guy'.

But they'll never learn, cause they're alright thanks Jack.

The ultimate insult and still we do nothing! And now, we have given them a trouble free Xmas as well.
Senior Managers are worth every penny of their bonus and we deserve what we get - again.
If, like me, you have been doing CC for ages - good for us. We must be in the minority because the ship still floats pretty well despite the whining.
That's it then - most people must be happy with their COS and it's just the vocal minority that cause all the fuss. There are no better deals around out there and Cathay knows it. Sit back and watch the slide continue. Your own fault.......

Like it or not it was the smart move guys! Just the victim of some unfortunate timing that negotiations begun just prior to Christmas.

This is how "good faith bargaining" works. Show me one other airline where a union takes industrial action during negotiations AND the negotiations continue with any measure of success?

Guys are pi**ed and CX gets that. Use that energy as leverage so CX knows if negotiations fail to produce a satisfactory outcome industrial action will follow. If we were to formally launch any action now then it would turn us back years and will have no choice but to wait for a bone.

My only concern is if the negotiating team understands this too. Are they capable of putting aside emotions and negotiating smartly? Only time will tell.
