Lost pay due to sickness

Ever since HDP became part of the CX remuneration we have been penalized financially when taking sickness days. This encourages people who cannot afford this financial loss to work when sick, jeopardizing the health and safety of others. We see this more and more these days.

The Hong Kong Employment Ordinance, Cap 57, Section 33, (4BAAA)(a) seems to say that wages for a sickness day should be equivalent to those on a day of annual leave, in other words, 2 hours of HDP credit. We get NO HDP credit for sickness days.

Thoughts?

This might fit in nicely with the Statutory Holiday Pay issue...

CX is a caring company. Nobody will be punished for being sick. However you may end up on a list to be reviewed over a two day period by senior management sometime in the future.

The rate of sickness allowance is specified in the Hong Kong Employment Ordinance, Cap 57, Section 35 - "Rate of Sickness Allowance" as quote in the following,
"(2) The daily rate of sickness allowance is a sum equivalent to four-fifths of the daily average of the wages earned by the employee... "

and the method of calculating average daily wages is the same as that for annual leave and statutory holiday.

Do you lose money when you are sick? Or, do you get extra for actually working? Depends on how you look at it. All the more reason to ensure you negotiate for the very highest base salary you can.

Oh yes Batman, negotiate a massive salary, go for it! I am sure the DFO's door will be open and you will be welcomed with open arms, champagne and canapé. That's exactly the kind of caring company CX is!
