The only thing one can do is advise the people in the back that the seatbelt sign is on and for their own safety and the safety of others they should sit with their seatbelt fastened. They are not being held prisoner, they are not in forceable confinement. If they choose to disregard the advice from the Cabin Crew and ignore the seatbelt sign, there is not too much anyone can do...
If you have advised them of the sign, you have done your job and the onus is on them if they choose to disregard the sign.

What really peevs me off is when approaching the gate all the mainlanders get up and these little petit humans try unload their 20kg+ carry-on luggage before the final brakes have been applied and the seatbelt sign turned off - when brakes are applied that 20kg with added 'g' will snap someones head off one day. I would often call the closest CA and ask - ' what the hells going on' - that seems to get some attention.
gofor,
I have asked this very question already. The answer is that they confirm with their obligation by announcing during taxi-in that pax are kindly requried to remain seated with their belt fasten..

There is a simple solution.
Just come to a very harsh standstill at the gate!
That'll teach them!!

When travelling as staff I found the CX CC to be unrivalled in 5hithouse service, as a general rule. ( in Y that is, admittedly J was always quite good )
Try getting up to go to the loo as a staff traveller when some amateur has left the seatbelt on for hours in feeble turb....hello level 2.
I have found CX the worst for putting the seat belt sign on at the first ripple in their coffee and leaving it on, bar none. If you are going to do that then you can expect people to ignore the sign in lieu of bladder damage.

What utter rubbish.
I flew QF 737 BNE MEL a year ago when the belt signs came on and off no less than 10 times in the 1:50 min flight. Some times it was only on for 3 mins or less!! I kid you not.......
We all got a bit jack of the "The seat belt sign is now on, all passengers and crew must be immediately seated........"

Why do you care? Stopping the a/c in a huff just means you drag your own day out longer.
Power trips? Sounds like it's not always just the hosties who are worried about being obeyed.

While we are on this topic....
Why do the girls bother calling and asking when the seatbelt sign is going to be turned off?? Sometimes we just can't tell (CAT)....and no, I do not care about your tea and coffee service!!

They don't know what's causing the turbulence, so how about telling them? If you don't know how long the belts will be on, then say so.

Honestly don't know why any of you would care
enough to enact a braking or stoppage scenario.
Stop with the nanny state. Brief them once,
if they get up, it's their own deal. I don't care if they
get hurt. Neither should you. It's their decision.

I think before we proceed with this hillarious discussion we need first to
clarify the correct procedure how to switch the signs on in the first place!
PF: " SB on!"
PM ( puts his hand on the selector) : " Confirm SB on"
PF : " Check!"
PM ( if the Captain) evaluates the decision with all his experience and superior expertise. This process is not an easy one, it might take a few minutes.
If he concurs : " SB on!" , then selector to ON.
PM : points to the Eicas, " SB ARE on"
PF: " Check!"
Then both start the clock, the PM leaves his hand on the selector until the ISM calls the cockpit to confirm the cabin checks have been done.
( it goes without saying it is mandatory to follow this procedure on the freighter as well!)

Iron Skillet..
Please provide a single example of a bag hurting someone who was standing during turbulence. There are lots of examples of bins coming open and SEATED pax being injured.. maybe we should seat them in plastic bubbles..
People get hurt in car crashes, better take them off the road. Hell people die climbing Everest every year.. but we let them.. its their choice.

Yes, AAIGUY, obviously you're right and you make sense. Thank you for the very relevant examples, too.
Now I get it: Everything is everyone's choice, and others' choices are always fine, because it's their choice. And of course, their choices should always trump mine.

711,
Love the mouth music. Great laugh! Thanks.
Other than that, this thread is rubbish. What a waste of fine minds. Why am I even wasting my time commenting??? Get a life me!
