ATPL exams

Hi all,
Despite having completed a full set of UK ATPL subjects about nine years ago the HK CAD require me to sit a few of the Hong Kong ATPLs in order to upgrade my licence.
I have booked to take the first few in April and have been using the old notes from BAE Systems in Adelaide that I borrowed from a mate and using some Bristol Groundschool question banks which I believe are fairly representative of the exams. I was wondering if anybody had any good feedback or study materials that I could borrow or purchase especially anything from any of the recent courses in Adelaide. Also any advice from anybody who has been in the same position would be welcome as Flight Training Adelaide wont release anything to me unless I fly down and do a course.

Hey bud,

Have you looked into unfreezing your UK ATPL? Surely you just need the CAA form to get signed off when you next do your pc check. Then wouldn't it be a straight swop for the CAD ATPL?

There is a very good database available at http://www.aviationexam.com which is aimed at JAA and FAA candidates.

You are kidding yourself if you think you can roll up to the exams with a bunch of stuff from the UK and pass. Without current HKG Vol 8's to give you a heads up you won't even get close.

Other problem is that if you attempt the HKG exams and they introduce new exam papers as they occasionally do, and you fail, as people occasionally do, then you are locked into doing the HKG exams whatever it takes.

No chance of going back to doing the frozen foreign ATPL that you joined with. Suppose it depends how much of a risk you want to take.

15,000 Questions!

AVIATIONEXAM has roughly 15,000 multiple choice format JAA ATPL(A) questions on their database. It's going to be awhile before the HKG CAD write any questions they haven't thought of yet.

126.9 I fear you haven't done the HKG exams and haven't got a clue what you are talking about. There is no connection, aside from the fact that a pen is required in both, between anything JAR and the HKG exams.

Vol 8's for the HKG exams or you are dreaming.

But if you want to do the HKG exams without the vol 8 then go right ahead, it's never been successfully done before.

if you are getting a HK ATPL I assume you are getting/have got a job here ? If so then any company in HK will have " sample " HKCAD exams which is about the only sure way to get through ( other than a truckload of study ).
I had an Oz ATPL and would have failed most of the exams miserably as they have some pretty weird/stupid questions, the one that stands out is :

What is the cost of a log book ? ( I 5hit you not )

Hi Hong Kong Fooey,
I remember that question from Air Law. Something like 112 dollars I recall. Yes I am employed by CX but at the moment it is still a real pain to get any sort of feedback from recent exams or courses. The library on the 5th floor of the FTC had a load of books and manuals but that was about it.

Cav, surely ask about with colleagues for CAD vol8s! Especially the newer colleagues. I used to have some but think I've binned them now. If I find them I'll let you know.

I had to write four subjects for my HKG ATPL(A). Granted, it's awhile ago, but I studied those subjects for for a day each prior to the exams and passed easily. Subsequent to that I've taken the JAA ATPLs—all fourteen! Compared to the same subjects I took for my original ATPL and those taken for the JAA, the HKG questions were no harder and all pretty familiar.

It would be utter BS to suggest you could pass Met theory, Met prac, nav, flt planning, Inst and Radio aids by doing a day study on each without the vol 8 and then sit all 6 over two days with no breaks inbetween.

Compared to the same subjects I took for my original ATPL and those taken for the JAA, the HKG questions were no harder and all pretty familiar.

Familiar to what? It's not that the HKCAD exams are difficult, it's just that they're based on a curriculum that's not seen in the civilized world since the Falklands War. The only way to pass without getting a full-time job reading 18th century air-law is to get your hands on the Vol-8s.

You could have spent a lifetime instructing the FAA/JAA(EASA) syllabus and still miserably fail the HKCAD exams.

Wow, sounds really hard.

I'm pretty new to the industry(700hours total, 500 of multi-turbine)

In 6 months or so I'm looking to move to Hong Kong, I'm almost through the ATPL's(Australian).

My question is, are there any airlines in Hong Kong that would either accept a 1000hr pilot(100hrs command, 800 F/O(Cadet))

And if so could anyone point me in the right direction to start looking for a suitable employer.

I've looked at Hong Kong Express, and have put in an expression of interest but have the feeling that I'm not competitive with such an airline.

Why are you looking at HK with no job? Its not like that in HK. and you can only get a license if employed by an airline.
If HKE are not interested, then you may find no other company interested with that lack of experience.
You can apply for a Cathay Cadet entry pilot, but that is best done from home.
Coming to HK is not quite like going to Darwin or Kunnanurra.

I have some problems answering the following questions. Would appreciate your help.

3.) What minimum ground visibility is required to enable a SVFR flight to take off from an aerodrome in a CTR ? A.) 1000m B.) 1500m C.) 2000m D.) 3000m


4.)If the braking action is reported by ATS as 0.25 or below, the condition for braking is : A.) GOOD B.) MEDIUM/POOR C.) MEDIUM D.) POOR
