A Bit of Advice

Gents and gentets,

im currently in the mixer with the cadet program interviews, im wondering what Cathays take on moving out with a long term partner would possibly be? And how they would find getting into Hong Kong, i hear that work visas are like gold dust unless the authorities want you?

Basically it doesnt matter how long you have been with your partner, defacto relationships are not recognised in Hong Kong.
If your partner is under 30 and Australian ( maybe other nationalities also, but not sure ) she can get a 12 month work visa.
If your partner has a required skill here she could easily get a work visa ( ie teacher ) and I think even some english teachers ( which is what a lot of expat wives do ) can get visas, but I think this is rare.
There are plenty of shonky mobs that will hire your partner and pay her cash, of course if she gets caught you could both get ejected from HK, which might be a bit of a problem for you
Otherwise ( depending on your passport ) your partner will have to leave HK every 3 months.
Everything will have to be in your name, and if/when you have an issue with any utilitys etc, they will only speak to you, a bit of a problem if you are in NY when ( not if ) the TV/Phone/Internet goes tits up.
Cheers

Nope, totally different.
If married she will get a dependants visa from you and will then be eligible to live/work in HK. Also will be able to get a HKID card whithout which you pretty much CANNOT do anything around here
Cheers

Is it then easy for your spouse to find work or is teaching english the only real option? Do you know if Cathay help the families of aircrew find work (with them or otherwise). thanks again.

You're a lot funnier than your namesake Bob

Matt, if your partner has a profession then she should be able to find a job although the finance sector is still pretty weak.
English teaching seems to be the choice for expats wives I think due to the fact its easy to get into and the pay is not bad. The pay for normal ( shop, food, retail etc ) jobs is crap, but a lot of people will tell you 1/2 the problem with this place is keeping the other 1/2 happy and occupied.

Flight Crew Recruitment Manager?

If you marry her, she can apply for the above position. Has worked for some.
