ID90Y Upgrade If Economy Class Full?

I've read thru the IntraCX leisure travel section, but it doesn't make it clear (to me).

Q: If travelling on an ID90 Y class ticket and economy class is full, does one get upgraded if there are available seats in business?

I have heard of upgrades from business to first, but haven't heard of upgrades from economy. Is it worth politely pressing the point with the counter staff? I've booked the jump seat in any case.

Believe the policy is to upgrade Asia Miles / OneWorld FF pax first.

I've heard of/seen plenty of staff get upgrades from Y to J, just not expats, thats all.
I believe the CX policy is not to upgrade staff who have not forked out for/ not entitled to J, but unlike Qantas, there seems to be nothing in the CX system that flags it, so the check in staff basically do what they like.

Absolute rubbish you guys write

CX Policy CHANGED Sept 2007. Staff WILL be upgraded if required. I know 3 friends that have been upgraded Y to J and another from J to F TWICE.

Sept 2007 CX wrote wrote about "reinstatement and upgrade policy"

A review was carried out and a more streamlined policy was introduced.
Key priciples: - Booked pax should travel in their ticketed class where possible
-Downgrading should be minimized
-Passengers who are waitlisted in their ticketed class should be reinstated ahead of those buying upgrades using cash or asia miles
- scheme should be clear and concise.

Staff Travellers should be aware that their priority for acceptance has not changed. However this with this new policy their chances of being upgraded will be improved.

blah blah

Seems to be working as far as I know.

I bet you have more chance of an upgrade on an outport rather than going out of HK.

Chance, you say ? I believe it's more closer to a guarantee !!! Hong Kong check in staff have to be the most ruthless I've seen and on numerous occasions I have heard through others traveling worldwide on leisure travel that they would rather look after their 'own' first before offering an expat an upgrade.
Classic lines such as 'Are you willing to accept an economy seat if business is full' is still being heard, despite a specific letter being sent out to one and all recently about this ! I wonder if a call to our super-heros above would be the panacea at a time like that, handing over the phone to the responsible check in staff member to explain him/herself ?
At most outports that I have heard of, the staff there will do EVERYTHING they can to give you a J Class seat etc if that's what you listed under.
Same team, same dream (in Hong Kong) ??? I seriously doubt it. Pack of a**holes, if you ask me...

I generally agree with you BUT I know of upgrades done in HK, from Y to J and from J to F.

ACMS, lucky friends.
I know of at least 2 who have had J tickets and ended up in Y while the locals look after themselves.
FWIW, why should people who are too tight to fork out the extra few 100, or that there COS does not allow, be upgraded ?
But at the end of the day, as long as those that have paid for the correct tickets get looked after, I could'nt give a flying what they do with the rest.

As an aside, are CX cabin crew entitled to J ? just curious.

ACMS be careful when you say people write rubbish.

I have personally been denied a Y class seat and the flight departed with empty J class seats. I know because others got on and physically saw the empty seats. This has happened not just once.

Have also been bumped on confirmed annual FoC's.

The system is only as good as the people at the check-in desk. You must always be polite and not too pushy and some people seem to forget that basic concept.

However it does seem that no matter what your ticket or how courteously you conduct yourself, there are ways for check-in staff to twist the rules as they see fit.

The latest trick is if the staff dislikes your shoes! You can/will be denied a J Class seat purely at his/her edict of what constitutes appropriate footware (and we're not talking Nikes or flip-flops here, suede apparently is a fashion crime). You have no recourse but to be downgraged to Y Class or not go.

Check-in Clowns

Totally agree with all.

The check-in staff in Hong Kong are a bunch of pr!cks to put it politely.

They will do whatever they can to make it a miserable experience,. I always say hello and be polite, the same as I do for everyone else.

It still doesn't stop them from being a total pain in the ass and coming up with some bulltripe. I had excess bags of 20 kgs once and was told it would be in the order of $120HKD per kilo. I laughed so hard! Aparently no staff discount when travelling on ID tickets. Doesn't happen at out ports!

I have managed once to get J class travelling to Sydney. They had no choice with 95 punters on board.

Write it all down and send it all to management. Not my style at all, however, these guys are off the scale.

No I don't think it is anymore.

I tried to cut and paste it here but it wont work.

Maybe that's a good thing, as posting company material in here might not be wise.

Firstly, thanks to ACMS for pointing me in the right direction.

The reinstatement and upgrade policy is available on IntraCx. Go to the Travel Desk page, and then under Latest Updates select Show All. The policy is near the bottom.

If you suspect foul play at the check in counter you should contact the operating Captain after the flight and he will have the details.
Ie total pax and weight info.

Then make a report to the relevent manager in CX, he will follow it up with the "Airports dept" to see if there was any mal-practice on the day.

And copy the report to the AOA.

The outports are frequently checked by HK to see what they do in respect to downgrading/upgrading. That's why they are careful in what they do.

reinstatement and upgrade policy

ACMS,
careful when quoting the mysterious staff travel policy,

Sept 2007 CX wrote wrote about "reinstatement and upgrade policy"

Staff Travellers should be aware that their priority for acceptance has not changed. However this with this new policy their chances of being upgraded will be improved.

The above DOES NOT apply to SUBLO staff ID pax. Don't believe me then write to BNip and confirm it as I did 3 weeks ago when I was unable to travel in my ticketed class due to mass upgrades and one person using Asia miles to upgrade. I wrote in and stated the flight and details and the reply was that staff come behind upgrades and asia miles upgrades. I posted this on this thread earlier.

I was frantically trying to find the above mentioned upgrade policy at the airport to show the check-in staff but could not find it anywhere on the CX site, as it turns out it would not have mattered.

There is a lot of mis-understanding on this point and it is something that CX need to state clearly to remove all the mystery and hysteria about who gets on when and in what.

That policy DID apply to staff otherwise why would thay have bothered to post it in the STAFF TRAVEL site?

I also have it confirmed by the MEL staff that this IS the current policy.

Someone is telling porky pies somewhere ( and I don't mean you CM )

I was explained to me that all frequent travellers and Asiamiles customers will be upgraded and then staff Id travellers will get the seats left over - ie if you are on a J class Id 90 then you will get the seat before they upgrade any 'normal' economy pax.

If you look on the pax list they give the captain next time you work you will see that on every flight there are at least 20 - 40 ruby and emerald and whathaveyou economy pax. These guys will all get upgraded to J before you will be accepted.

Your chance has slightly improved as the notice claimed because they stopped upgrading 'normal' econ pax.

Well that's NOT what the article said at all. It quite clearly said pax should travel in their ticketed class. Chances of upgrade for staff increased.

Then again it wouldn't be like Cx to abuse thie own policy would it !!
