S/O Upgrade time-frame?

What is the upgrade time from S/O to JFO these days? Has it been pushed past 3 years with the DEFO's, DEC's, retirement age increase, impending 3-man ULH, etc?

Pushed past three year? Shoved out to 4+ years more like. Command... another matter all together.

Can't wait for my Xmas 13th month!

Is that just speculation or have the S/O's that are doing their upgrades right now been with the company for more than 4 years?

Move this to the Wannabes forum

Mod1,

I can only assume from your questions that you are neither currently employed by CX, or been offered employment by CX.

Please correct me if I am wwrong.

However, If I am correct, this thread should be on the Wannabes forum:

http://www.pprune.org/fragrant-harbour-wannabes-99/

MODERATORS, can you pleae move this to the Wannabes forum where it belongs.

This year, some SO did the JFO upgrade after a little over 2.5 years. However, with no significant growth planned til the end of 2009, you can expect it to increase. I was told about two months ago that some current SO expect their upgrade after between four to five years. It can all change quite quickly.

I agree, whats the point in asking the 'wannabees' time to JFO upgrade, its the guys already in CX you need to ask. So looks like anywhere between 2.5 - 5 years.

Mod1, et al :

if you are planning to work for Cathay you will have the pleasure to meet Broadband and his friends in person. The place is unfortunately full of cynical, unfriendly people with very big elbows. They hardly miss a chance to demonstrate a junior pilot their superiority, after all most of them do not have a life beside their employment with Cathay.

Maybe it is the whole, military derived Cathay-system of monitoring and checking that turns vulnerable guys into backstabbers, maybe it is the multicultural/expat situation that confuses some, who knows.

I know this sounds a bit negative, but I never worked for an airline where you constantly have to watch your back as it is the case here.
Of course a lot of good guys working here as well, but just be aware of most probably a totally different company culture compared to what you are used to if you really decide to join.

Thanx for the post. It's nice to see there are still people like you around. We've all been wannabees some time in our lives, even if the question came from a wannabee, other more experienced pilots may still wanna have an answer to it.

And don't forgot that cx has a lot of good blokes/girls working for them- in contrast to what's sometimes shown on here! Upgrade time will probably slide out a bit but things can change pretty quickly. It was only about 3 years ago that it took nearly 4 years for an upgrade but that came back to close to 2 years in no time.

I agree. There are a lot of good blokes around in CX. BUT, maaate, there are also a lot of outrageous losers around - unfortunately Cathay Pathetic sometimes seems to reward these loosers with Check&Training positions. They then excercise their completely outdated methods on the rest of the corps. Really pathetic. But if you are without a job and want a free rating - sure join.

Back to your topic. 2.5-3Y seems to be the upgrade time at the moment. Surely thats changing right now with the planned expansion on hold. If you dont mind not flying and having lots of days off then you will have a great time. But professionally you are finished for 3Y. You will become a master of sandwich eating and listening to sim instructors who havnt flown a real airplane for 20Y telling you how to operate wx radars, fly NDB approaches and stuff. You will get used to reading **** up and down the monitor in a sick Electronic Reporting System. Come join and live the Cathay Dream. See you at Stauntons maaate. hahhha

Yeager,

That negative attitude of yours is totally unacceptable. I for one, am very happy to be wearing the Cathay stripes.

God Bless Australia.

Hey Icebloke or maybe its Mr. Icebloke,

Well spotted young lad. As a matter of fact I was talking about both me and you in that sentence. Now all you have to do, and this is simple, is to figure out whos who

Now get out there and fly those big shiny jets boys.

About six months ago it was 2 years and 7 months to start of JFO upgrade course - which then takes up to three months to complete. Right now it is creeping back to 3 years to start of course and if things keep deteriorating then it may very well be longer soon.

There - question answered.

next years budget is yet to be released, after which we will have a better idea.
If you come to CX then anything less than 4 years is a bonus. Upgrades last year were at 4 years, and reduced to 2.5 years at the earlier this year. This time has now increased again to 3 years. Depending on how many upgrades are done next year and depending on how many DEFO are employed, will determine if this time will further increase out to 3.5-4 years?

Any ones guess at the moment..., but expansion is slowing.

DEC, DEFO, and 3 man ULH will all contribute in an increase in time to upgrade, as it already has.

Yeager - It's a pity you do not live up to your selected "handle". You must be such a well balanced maaate!! Thought you were leaving this airline that you obviously hate so much, or is no other airline going to employ such an ego!

Yeager.... I for one will miss your digs at the establishment when you finally move on to greener pastures. All the best Maaate...
