I read doing a search on here that housing allowance is only for 15 years, but that's the only thread I've seen that on. Could anyone verify if that is true or not? Is that true whether you do a mortgage or rent?

if you bought for a period of time (ie 6yrs) then sold & returned to renting you would still be owed 9 yrs of mortgage assistance to use later.
