SOCCER PLAYERS NEEDED (DFO letter, 25 Jan)

Nick, let me help you 'understand' a bit better why a Flight Dept with over 2500 members, and a Ground Tech staff of over 500 cannot come up with enough players for a single football team. Answer: MORALE. If your departments can slowly but surely strangle morale over a period of years, you arrive at the present situation, whereupon almost 3000 people can't stomach the thought of 'playing' for the benefit of CX. Perhaps you need to digest this fact, and then extend the lesson to every other area of this rather sad airline. Sincerely, ATY

I agree.

To be honest I am surprised to sense the tone of voice that are portrait in these weekly letters.

Take this one for example, comments like that are appalling. It's as though they don't realize that morale is low. Is this the first time they've run an operations involving others??? Is this the first time they've been in a situation where morale continuously sinks? Because they sure aren't acting like they know how to fix things.

If they want to run a company where employees like to "play football" for the companies' team, it takes a lot more than a pitiful "I can't believe we can't round up 11 guys to play!!!"

Quality of Life, COS, Pay, Respect. It's basic psychology.

That is funny and soooooo true.

Don't want to leave paxs stranded do we? The very same people that think we are million dollar morons and are overpaid, unless you are on fire of course or both engines fail to respond.

....sad but true. I have never worked anywhere where morale was so low amongst the workforce, distrust and contempt for management so high, and management so blind or simply so disinterested in the problem. It is incredible that Swire etc allow this situation to perpetuate. Most worldclass companies realised years ago that you will get more out of a happy, motivated workforce...for very little cost...than a downtrodden and resentful one. Cathay really is so far behind the thinking of a modern company as to be positively Victorian in its approach to its workforce. If you can't build a soccer team and you really need to ask why in your weekly propaganda drive then you have to question your understanding of the reality outside of those managerial offices surely? And to print that we are not short of crew and print all sorts of statistics.....lies, damn lies and statistics....to prove the point, when most captains and many FOs are regularly working overtime, and many flights are being crewed from the reserve list, and pilots are constantly being called on G days to work, just demonstrates either the lies that are freely propagated by management, or indeed if we genuinely are not undercrewed, the incompetence of the rostering and crewing depts. Either way, it's hardly a glowing portrayal of the relevent parties.
Of course, while the airline is making record profits and chasing the poison dollar nothing will appear to be wrong...it ain't broke so don't fix it...and so nothing will change because no one in power here is man enough to step up to the plate and do the right thing, but the rot has well and truly begun to set in, and longterm it is inevitable that it will begin to take effect.
It is such a shame that a company that was created and built on such pioneering and adventurous spirit has gone so far in the opposite direction. Guys leaving Cathay Pacific to go to EasyJet and Brunei et al....who would have thought it, hey?
Rant over....ring ring...mmmm2747...put the kettle on, Love....

We need to realise that CX is nothing more than a toy for Swires to play with and mention at dinner parties. They could end the whole airline tomorrow and not even see a change on their balance sheet. Morale???? They couldn't care less.

Devil

Maybe they just cant find 11 girly kinda sissies to play the bl00dy game. Don't worry, the acadamy awards are taking place soon enough, maybe most of the worlds soccer players will get an honourable mention.

Who would want to run for 90 minutes in the Hong Kong air? Not to mention having to be NR's team mate.
